Chapter 465
Evelyn Ross's words made Jane Evans pause.
John Evans immediately pressed, "What jade?"
Jane lowered her gaze.
Just as Evelyn was about to explain, Jane took out her phone and typed a message for her to read: "Sister Grace, I threw that jade away."
Evelyn was stunned. "Threw it away?"
Jane nodded.
Evelyn frowned. "Alright."
She and Alexander Vance took John and his sister home before leaving.
John looked at Jane. "Jane, wasn't that jade a keepsake from your family? Why would you throw it away? And it's clearly under your pillow. Why lie?"
Jane lowered her eyes and signed, "Brother, I found them."
John's eyes lit up. "Where? Are they rich? They placed so many ads looking for you... Jane, you can have a better life with them!"
Jane's eyes instantly reddened.
John was taken aback. "Jane, what's wrong?"
Jane signed, "Brother, are you trying to send me away?"
John quickly waved his hands. "No, I just think you deserve a better life..."
She continued signing, "I'm willing to endure any hardship as long as I'm with you."
John insisted, "But your family has been searching everywhere for you. They must love you dearly! Jane, you..."
Jane let out two agitated "ah" sounds, her eyes red as she signed fiercely, "I don't want those relatives. They are all terrible people!"
They treated human life like dirt!
They disgusted her!
Sign language couldn't convey complex emotions, only her simple, raw hatred.
John quickly soothed her. "Okay, okay, I won't mention it again... Don't get upset..."
With red-rimmed eyes, Jane rushed into her room, locked the door, and curled up in tears.
How could she have such despicable relatives...
Especially Jason Evans, that so-called cousin who tried to assault her... and broke her brother's leg!
And Justin Evans...
He used to be a loving brother, but now he was utterly repulsive.
She would never forgive them. Never!
Crying, Jane took the jade from under her pillow and threw it violently into the trash.
But something felt wrong immediately.
She retrieved it and examined it closely, realizing the quality was off...
She had carried this jade for years, familiar with its warm, smooth texture.
Holding it in her hand, Jane suddenly realized—it had been swapped!
This wasn't her original piece...
Her eyes widened in shock as understanding dawned.
It was Jason...
Jason must have taken the real jade and replaced it with a fake...
Did he think she still wanted to return to that family?
Clutching the fake jade tightly, Jane threw it back into the trash.
She sat in silence for a long time before finally leaving her room.
John had been anxiously waiting, unsure how to comfort his distraught sister. He approached her immediately. "Are you okay, sis?"
Jane looked directly at him and signed, "Brother, let's leave this place."
John was stunned. "But your university is here..."
She continued signing, "I'll drop out. With the Evans family here, they won't let me graduate."
John fell silent.
Jane signed, "Brother, I can't find a job here. I can't graduate. It's better to leave this place of bad memories."
She didn't want to be so close to that family...
She wanted to escape forever, so they could never find her!
John spoke up, "Didn't Evelyn mention the Nora Research Institute yesterday? Let's give it a try. If the interview doesn't work out, we'll leave."
Jane nodded in agreement.
Neither noticed someone lurking outside, watching them.
It was a man sent by Jason to monitor the siblings. He understood sign language and had decoded Jane's messages.
He immediately called Jason. "Young Master, Jane Evans is going for an interview at the Nora Research Institute tomorrow. If she fails, she plans to leave New York forever!"
Jason sneered. "Perfect. Set up an ambush on their way out. Get rid of these two nuisances for good. Make sure they never return!"
"Yes, sir!"
The subordinate hung up.
The next day arrived quickly.
Jane woke up feeling much calmer.
John studied her expression carefully and sighed in relief seeing she seemed normal.
He followed her on his crutches. "Let's go to the interview!"
Jane spoke, "I can go alone. You should rest at home, brother."
John shook his head. "This is too strange. I'm coming with you. If there's any danger, I'm still a man."
Jane nodded. "Okay."
They took the bus to the Nora Research Institute.
Standing before the imposing, serene compound, they were awestruck.
Such a large estate in downtown New York was astonishing.
They approached the security guard.
Jane was too nervous to speak.
The guard asked first, "What brings you here?"
John swallowed hard. "We... we're here for an interview..."
The guard paused. "An interview? Do you have an appointment letter? Let me see..."
John nudged Jane.
Jane quickly handed over her phone with the WhatsApp message.
The guard examined it and frowned.
He looked up, studying Jane and John with suspicion.
John asked nervously, "Is there a problem with the message? We were unsure if it was real but thought we'd try. Sorry to bother you..."
He started to bow.
In the distance.
The stalker called Jason. "Haha! They got stopped by security! Young Master Zhao, it's just as you predicted!"
Jason scoffed. "A mute college student trying to get into the Nora Research Institute? What a joke!"
As the words left his mouth, he saw the security guard reach out and steady John's arm.
