Chapter 499
Susan Langley nestled into Preston Valentine's arms.
She looked at Evelyn Ross with a challenging gaze.
"Little sister, it's your choice."
Evelyn's lips curved into a faint smile.
She didn't speak, simply turned around.
"I'll go see."
Ethan Valentine immediately followed.
"I'll go with you."
"If anyone dares to touch you, they'll regret it."
Charles Valentine quickly caught up.
"And me."
The other Valentine brothers followed suit.
Preston was about to step forward.
But Susan held onto his arm.
"Preston, I'm scared."
"Will there be a fight later?"
"Is this really appropriate for your sister?"
"She was in the wrong to begin with."
Preston frowned.
"I need to go watch. I can't let her get hurt."
Susan spoke softly, persuading him.
"The other brothers are all going."
"She won't get hurt."
"This is the Vance estate. No one would dare start anything."
"I think we should inform the elders."
Preston paused.
"Inform the elders?"
Things would be hard to control if they escalated.
Susan's eyes darted.
"At least tell the Valentine elders."
"They still don't know about this."
Preston looked into the distance.
The Vances hadn't come out to greet the Valentines.
But the Valentines were still the top of New York's five great families.
People only dared to gossip behind their backs.
When they saw the Third Mr. Valentine, they still rushed to curry favor.
The Third Mr. Valentine was currently surrounded by a crowd.
As Preston hesitated, Susan pulled him forward.
"Preston, hurry and tell your uncle."
They approached the Third Mr. Valentine.
He was in the middle of a conversation.
Richard Evans was restless.
The Vances had been so disrespectful, yet the Valentines still entered.
The matriarch even personally took the Valentine daughter aside to chat.
Was this marriage alliance really that solid?
No, he had to sabotage the union.
If Alexander Vance married into the Valentines, his position would be secure.
Richard helped Robert Vance to his feet.
"Father, let's go greet the Third Mr. Valentine."
Robert nodded.
They walked toward the Third Mr. Valentine.
The Third Mr. Valentine was proud, but he observed proper etiquette.
He ignored Richard.
But Robert was Alexander's father. He had to give face.
He gave Robert a slight nod.
Robert cleared his throat.
He had intended to find fault and mock.
But facing the Third Mr. Valentine, the words stuck in his throat.
The Third Mr. Valentine's presence was too imposing.
The Third Mr. Valentine asked.
"Is there something, in-law?"
Robert quickly replied.
"Nothing. Alexander is delayed. He'll arrive later."
The Third Mr. Valentine nodded.
"Understood."
Robert added.
"Something came up earlier. We couldn't come out to greet you. Please don't take offense."
"Of course not. We'll be family soon. No need for formalities."
The Third Mr. Valentine smiled and patted Richard's shoulder.
Two pats that nearly shattered Richard's shoulder bone.
He endured the pain and forced himself to ask.
"Sir, I heard you found your biological daughter. And that she was previously married, with a child?"
The Third Mr. Valentine smiled.
"Yes. The child is called Chloe. The Vances will treat her as their own, won't they?"
Richard had meant to sneer, but was instead put on the spot.
He didn't know how to respond.
Preston and Susan approached.
Preston didn't recognize Robert and Richard.
He cautiously paused.
"Uncle, there's something I need to tell you. Could you step aside for a moment?"
Susan glanced at their attire, then looked toward the main seat.
She had an idea but pretended ignorance.
"Uncle, Evelyn's boy toy is at the banquet. He's making a scene after being stopped at the entrance. You should go see quickly! It'll be terrible if the Vances find out!"
The Third Mr. Valentine remained silent.
Preston was stunned and hurriedly pulled Susan.
"Susan, shut up!"
Susan looked at him innocently.
"Preston, what's wrong? Didn't we come to tell Uncle? Uncle should handle this quickly. This is the Vance banquet. It would be bad if they discovered."
The Third Mr. Valentine glanced briefly at Susan, then looked at Preston.
He turned to Robert with a faint smile.
"Do you know who these two are?"
Preston's heart sank.
The Third Mr. Valentine said.
"This is Elder Vance. Next to him is Mr. Richard Evans, Alexander's older brother."
Preston froze.
He sharply turned to look at Susan.
Susan panicked.
"Preston, I... I didn't know..."
Preston took a deep breath and forced a smile at Richard and Robert.
Before he could speak, Robert angrily said.
"Third Mr. Valentine, your Valentine daughter has gone too far!"
He stamped his foot and looked at Richard.
Richard immediately chimed in.
"Yes, brazenly bringing a boy toy to the banquet. This is a slap to Alexander's face! Father, this marriage should be called off! It's too humiliating!"
Robert shouted.
"Call it off! It must be called off!"
The Third Mr. Valentine remained calm and composed.
He lightly placed his wine glass on the table.
The "tap" sound made both men immediately fall silent.
Everyone knew the Third Mr. Valentine was bloodthirsty and killed without blinking.
The Third Mr. Valentine smiled faintly.
"Mr. Vance, Nephew Evans, shall we go take a look? See what this boy toy of my daughter actually looks like!"
