Chapter 510
Justin watched as Amelia White entered the house.
He followed her silently.
His footsteps were very light.
His mind was completely occupied with Jane.
He needed to investigate the background of anyone who got close to her.
That Nathan just now...
Justin narrowed his eyes.
He had bullied that kid plenty when they were young.
Their families were distant relatives.
Amelia was his mother's cousin.
So they interacted fairly frequently.
But the White family was on a completely different level than his.
Amelia was always subservient and deferential around his mother.
That deliberate, ingratiating attitude made him deeply uncomfortable.
So he always took it out on Nathan.
Justin followed for a few more steps.
As he neared Jane's door, he suddenly stopped.
The image of Jane's angry, puffed-up face flashed in his mind.
Her clear eyes were filled with the message: "Go away."
Justin's feet felt like lead.
He didn't dare go any further.
He was afraid his sister would hate him even more.
Afraid she would be angry because of him.
John's words echoed in his ears: "If you don't want Jane to rest properly, then go right ahead!"
Justin finally leaned against the wall.
He lowered his head.
His fingers unconsciously picked at the peeling paint.
What should he do?
How could he get his sister to be a little nicer to him?
"Stop that!"
An angry shout came from inside the house.
Justin's head snapped up.
It was Nathan's voice.
Inside the room.
Amelia White was gripping Jane's arm.
She was pulling Jane so hard she stumbled.
This was the scene Nathan saw when he rushed in.
His mother was forcing Jane to the ground.
Jane was struggling, but couldn't make a sound.
Hearing the noise, Amelia froze.
She turned her head toward the door.
Jane also looked over.
The moment she saw Nathan, Jane's eyes reddened.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
Nathan wore gold-rimmed glasses.
He was usually gentle and refined.
But now his face was full of shock.
He rushed forward and pushed his mother away.
"Mom, what are you doing?!"
He positioned himself protectively in front of Jane.
He turned and helped Jane up.
"Jane, are you okay?"
His voice trembled.
He looked Jane over from head to toe.
Trying to check if she was hurt.
But Jane was wearing long sleeves.
He couldn't see anything.
Jane waved her hand.
She signed: "I'm fine."
Only then did Nathan turn to his mother.
"Mom, you promised me you would treat Jane well!"
His voice was filled with disappointment.
Amelia was defiant. "What did I do? You're overreacting."
Nathan roared, "I heard everything! What you said, what you did, I heard it all!"
Seeing she couldn't hide it, Amelia snorted coldly.
Nathan looked at her with disappointment.
"You said you didn't care about Jane's background, didn't you?"
"I don't care about her background," Amelia raised her voice, "but she's mute! How can I not care about that? She's disabled, you're normal! Can't you find another woman? Do you have to choose her? What normal family would let their son marry a mute?"
Nathan was stunned.
He stared at his mother.
"So this past month... you weren't sick?"
"You deliberately kept me from seeing Jane?"
Amelia sighed.
"Nathan, listen to me. Our family may be wealthy, but in New York, we're nobody. If you marry a mute with no background on top of that, I'll be the laughingstock of my social circle! Do you know how many people secretly mock me for trying to curry favor with Mrs. Evans?"
Nathan yelled, "Then stop trying to curry favor! Why do you have to suck up to others?"
Amelia shook her head.
"Isn't it all for this family? Do you think with so many electronics companies, ours would have survived? If the Evans family didn't occasionally throw us a project, we'd have gone bankrupt long ago!"
Nathan was speechless.
Amelia continued her tearful plea.
"I'm doing this for your own good! I'm your mother! Are you going to defy me for a woman?"
Nathan's face tightened.
"If you don't like Jane, you should have told me directly. Why pretend it's fine, then control me behind my back?"
Amelia scoffed.
"Don't I know you? Since you were little, whenever I told you not to have something, you always found a way to get it. Could I have stopped you?"
She took a step forward.
Her tone became earnest.
"Nathan, wake up. This mute isn't right for you. You'll take over the company someday. Your wife needs to help you with social diplomacy. She's mute, what can she do for you?"
Nathan retorted.
"That's not the kind of love I want! I don't need that much money either, what we have is enough to live on!"
"Enough to live on?" Amelia's voice rose again. "With the global economic crisis, that money will be worthless in a decade or two! Do you think you can live carefree forever?"
She stared at Nathan.
"Let me tell you, I've already chosen your future wife."
Nathan was taken aback.
"Chosen? Who?"
"The Evans family's daughter," Amelia said, word by word. "Mrs. Evans's daughter."
Nathan laughed.
It was a mocking laugh.
"You look down on Jane, but do you think Mrs. Evans would look favorably on us? Would she marry her daughter down to our family?"
Amelia lowered her voice.
"You don't understand. I heard they found the Evans daughter. She grew up in the slums. A girl like that, good families won't want her. But our family doesn't mind. They'll let her marry down to you."
Her eyes gleamed.
"Then you treat her well, and I'll keep buttering up Mrs. Evans. Do you think Mrs. Evans would stand by and watch her daughter suffer?"
She took Nathan's hand.
"Nathan, Mom is doing this for you. You and this mute have no future. But you and Mrs. Evans's daughter will have a bright future."
She leaned closer.
"I heard the Evans family feels very guilty toward this daughter. They're planning to give her a third of the shares. And that Justin... didn't he bully you since you were kids? Let me tell you, he feels the most guilty toward this sister. If you marry his sister, he'll definitely treat you well in the future."
Her voice softened.
"Nathan, be good. Come home with Mom. Don't stay with this mute anymore, okay?"
Nathan looked at her.
His expression shifted from shock to disappointment.
Finally, it settled into resolve.
He shook off his mother's hand.
"You think this is good, that is good."
"But have you ever asked what I think?"
He turned.
He stood in front of Jane.
His back straight and firm.
"Mom, let me tell you."
"I choose Jane."
