Chapter 511
Nathan shielded Jane behind him.
Hearing those words, Jane's eyes reddened slightly.
She looked up at Nathan.
Her clear eyes were brimming with emotion.
Jane had never been in love before.
Her heart was as pure and simple as a blank sheet of paper.
The thought of breaking up with Nathan made her heart ache.
Seeing him choose her so firmly now, Jane only felt guilt.
Her moment of hesitation earlier felt like a betrayal of their feelings.
Nathan was standing up to his own mother for her.
How could she retreat?
Seeing her son remain unmoved, Mrs. White looked past him, her gaze landing on Jane.
"Jane, is it?"
Mrs. White's voice was cold and hard.
"Let me talk to you, young lady, since I can't get through to my son."
She paused.
"Actually, I'm asking you to break up for your own good."
"Think about it. You and he are from completely different worlds."
"When he takes over the company, and other wives engage in social diplomacy, you won't be able to help him at all."
"Won't he eventually see you as a burden?"
"And with your background, how could you possibly be a good match for our family?"
"If you marry him, the day will come when he grows tired of you."
"So, breaking up is best for both of you."
Mrs. White took a check from her purse.
"Here, I'll give you some money."
"Go abroad."
"You can escape the Evans family, and I'll consider it compensation for a brighter future."
Nathan listened to this and turned to look at Jane.
His gaze was clear and unwavering.
Like a spring of pure, untainted water.
Meeting his eyes, the last trace of hesitation in Jane's heart vanished.
She shook her head at Mrs. White.
Then, she took a step forward.
She stood firmly by Nathan's side.
Nathan immediately took her hand.
Their fingers intertwined.
"Mom, you don't need to try to drive a wedge between us."
Nathan's voice was quiet but each word was distinct.
"I'm telling you, we won't break up."
"I, Nathan White, have made up my mind."
"I will only love Jane for the rest of my life."
He took a deep breath.
"If I ever change my heart, if I ever fail her..."
"May I be struck by lightning and die a wretched death!"
Jane quickly raised her hand and covered his mouth.
She shook her head frantically.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
She wouldn't let him say such things.
Mrs. White trembled with rage.
"You... you ungrateful child!"
"You have no respect for your own mother!"
"Are you trying to kill me?!"
She clutched her chest, breathing heavily.
Her face turned pale.
But Nathan did not back down.
"Mom, whether you believe in my resolve or not."
"I truly love Jane."
"Her serene nature is the peaceful life I've always wanted."
"Everyone has different pursuits."
"You want the White family to grow bigger and stronger."
"But I just want a stable, quiet life with Jane."
Nathan's voice held a plea.
"I'm begging you, please stop pressuring us, okay?"
Mrs. White immediately said, "No!"
"I said, if you want to be together, I don't agree!"
"You have to agree whether you like it or not!"
Nathan stated firmly.
"I'm not going back with you today."
"I'm an adult. I've graduated from university."
"I can make my own decisions about my life!"
He held Jane's hand.
"You should leave."
"I'm staying with Jane."
"If you won't help me mediate with the Evans family, then I'll stay here and protect her!"
Mrs. White laughed in extreme anger.
"What can you possibly protect her from?"
"Don't you know how despicable that Justin Evans is?"
"You go weak in the knees just at the sight of him."
"What could you do if he came?"
Nathan was timid.
Hearing this, his legs instinctively felt weak.
But he did not step back.
Instead, he shielded Jane even more tightly.
"I can take the beatings with Jane!"
Mrs. White: "..."
Nathan turned to look at Jane.
His eyes were serious and determined.
"Jane, I will treat you well."
"Even if I'm useless, I won't let you face these things alone."
Hearing his words, a warm current surged in Jane's heart.
She wanted to wave her hands.
To say it wasn't necessary.
To say Justin wouldn't hit her anymore.
To say she was the little princess of the Evans family.
But before she could express these thoughts.
Mrs. White suddenly clutched her chest.
She fell backward.
Staggering two steps, she leaned against the wall.
Her face was deathly pale.
Nathan was stunned.
"Mom!"
He let go of Jane and rushed over to support Mrs. White.
"Jane, come quick, look at my mom!"
"What's wrong with her?"
Jane was also flustered.
She immediately stepped forward.
She was, after all, a doctor.
After a simple check, she understood.
Jane waved at Nathan.
She explained using sign language.
"Your mother is fine..."
"She's pretending..."
Nathan looked at his mother.
"Mom, you're pretending?"
Hearing this, Mrs. White glared fiercely at Jane.
Then she looked at Nathan.
"My chest really hurts!"
"What does this girl know?"
"She's just a medical student!"
Mrs. White clutched her chest, her voice weak.
"Nathan, are you really going to abandon your mother?"
Nathan looked confused.
But Jane firmly shook her head and waved her hands.
Indicating she wasn't lying.
Seeing this, Mrs. White immediately clutched her chest and cried out.
"I've worked myself sick for you..."
"And this is how you repay me?"
"Nathan, how can you treat me like this after all I've sacrificed to raise you?"
"Do you remember when you were little, and I was bullied..."
"You hugged me and said you'd grow up to be successful and make me proud?"
"Is this how you repay me?"
Mrs. White's voice choked.
"You want to bring a mute girl home, to have me mocked by relatives and friends?"
"I don't want to live anymore!"
"If you really insist on being with this Jane Evans, I won't live!!"
Nathan looked at her.
"Mom, stop pretending..."
"Jane's grades were top in our school."
"Her diagnosis wouldn't be wrong."
"You're not having chest pains."
Jane nodded at Nathan.
Mrs. White's act halted.
Seeing Nathan trust Jane so completely, she was genuinely furious.
Mrs. White stared fixedly at Nathan.
Suddenly, she shouted angrily.
"You're determined not to listen to me?"
Nathan nodded.
"This time, I will stand by the path I've chosen."
"Mom, please stop pressuring me."
"You should go home first."
"I think we both need to cool down."
"To think carefully about whether my future is for you, or for myself."
Nathan's voice was low.
"Mom, all these years, constantly comparing yourself to others..."
"Have you really been happy?"
Mrs. White retorted angrily, "I have!"
"As long as it's for you, for the good of this family, I'm happy!"
"Nathan, you've disappointed me so much!"
"You must come home with me today!"
"I said, I'm not going back..."
Nathan's tone remained firm.
Hearing this, Mrs. White trembled with rage.
She suddenly stood up.
She pushed Nathan and Jane aside.
She rushed into Jane's room.
Jane was bewildered and unsure what to do.
Mrs. White charged back out.
She was holding the kitchen knife from Jane's home.
Her face was twisted.
Her eyes were wild.
She looked directly at Nathan.
Nathan, frightened, shielded Jane behind him.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
Mrs. White gave a cold laugh.
But she didn't move to attack them.
Instead, she placed the knife directly against her own neck.
The blade pressed against her skin.
"Let me ask you..."
Mrs. White's voice was hoarse.
"Choose her, or choose me?!"
"If you choose her, I'll kill myself right here in front of you!!"
