Chapter 518

Mrs. Evans saw three figures struggling at the gate from a distance.

Mrs. White raised her hand and slapped Jane twice.

Mrs. Evans' anger flared, and she strode over.

Her gaze swept over Mrs. White and Nathan, finally settling on Jane's swollen face.

"Why did you hit her?"

Mrs. White was startled, then quickly put on a smile.

"Cousin, I saw her loitering at the Evans' gate, and I heard she offended the third young master. I just wanted to vent some anger for you."

Mrs. Evans let out a cold laugh.

She turned her eyes to Nathan and noticed a slap mark on his face too.

"Who hit your face?"

Nathan instinctively looked at Jane.

Mrs. Evans immediately pressed Jane. "Why did she hit you?"

Nathan stammered, unable to speak.

Mrs. White rushed to answer. "Cousin, this girl was just trying to seduce my Nathan! How shameless!"

Jane stared in shock, then turned an angry gaze toward Nathan.

Mrs. Evans frowned. "She was seducing Nathan?"

"Exactly!" Mrs. White spoke with flying spittle. "She attended the same university as Nathan. She's been clinging to him since school. Just now at the gate, she stopped us, begging me to plead for her. When I refused, she started getting handsy with Nathan!"

Mrs. Evans' eyes shifted between the two.

"What exactly is your relationship?"

Mrs. White hurriedly waved her hands. "No relationship! Absolutely none! How could my Nathan possibly be interested in a mute? He likes Miss Evans!"

Mrs. Evans looked at Jane. "Jane, you tell me."

Jane took out paper and pen, her fingers trembling slightly.

She wanted to write "We are boyfriend and girlfriend," but her pen hovered in mid-air, never touching the paper.

What good would writing it do?

She silently put the paper and pen away.

Mrs. Evans turned to Nathan. "You tell me!"

Cold sweat broke out on Nathan's forehead.

He looked at Jane, then at his mother.

Mrs. White glared at him fiercely, lowering her voice. "Do you want to ruin the White family? If Mrs. Evans finds out you have a girlfriend, our whole family is finished!"

Nathan shuddered.

He remembered the bullying he endured from Justin Evans since childhood.

He remembered how his mother could never hold her head high in front of the Evans family.

He looked at Jane.

Jane stood there quietly, a last glimmer of hope in her eyes.

Mrs. White pushed him again. "Speak!"

Nathan clenched his fists, nails digging into his palms.

He took a deep breath and slowly lowered his head under Jane's gaze.

"Her and I... have no relationship."

A mocking smile touched the corner of Jane's lips.

She should have expected this.

That young man who once stood in front of her, defying the whole world for her, had ultimately retreated.

She took a step back, as if all her strength had been drained.

Mrs. Evans stared at Nathan. "Are you sure?"

Nathan gritted his teeth and nodded. "I'm sure! Whatever the Evans family wants to do with her has nothing to do with me!"

He turned to leave.

Mrs. Evans suddenly stepped forward and slapped him across the face.

"Say that again? You really have no relationship?"

She trembled with rage.

Her daughter... the daughter she cherished and raised, was being treated like this!

Nathan covered his face, bewildered.

Mrs. White, thinking Mrs. Evans was angry about the arranged marriage, hurried to explain. "Cousin, they really have no relationship! Nathan only has Miss Evans in his heart! I swear!"

Mrs. Evans scoffed.

At this point, what was there left to understand?

No wonder Jane suddenly agreed to come to the Evans house today.

No wonder Nathan looked so reluctant during the arranged meeting.

So that was it.

Mrs. Evans spoke coldly. "So Nathan and Jane are not boyfriend and girlfriend, and never will be?"

Mrs. White nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes! How could Nathan possibly be with a mute..."

"Do you know who Jane is?" Mrs. Evans interrupted her.

Mrs. White was taken aback. "Isn't she just a mute?"

Mrs. Evans spoke word by word, her voice icy to the bone.

"She is my daughter!"
