Chapter 521

Evelyn Ross frowned slightly.

How was she supposed to answer this question?

From her standpoint, she naturally hoped Jane Evans would return to the Evans family.

After all, only by completing the task could she return to the Sterling Family to save her mother.

But given the current situation...

How could she possibly say that out loud?

Whether to forgive or not was Jane's own choice.

She had no right to interfere.

Evelyn was no saint, but she understood she couldn't use a favor to demand repayment.

Just as she hesitated, Jane seemed to understand something and turned to walk back towards the Evans residence.

Evelyn quickly stopped her. "That's not necessary."

Jane looked up at her.

Evelyn smiled. "Even if I forced you to go back, the rift between you and the Evans family wouldn't heal. A you who returns under those circumstances wouldn't be of much help to me anyway."

What she needed was a deep, binding connection.

If Jane couldn't reconcile with Justin Evans and Mrs. Evans, even if she went home, she wouldn't hold any real sway within the family.

Evelyn took a deep breath. "Let's go. I'll take you home."

Jane paused, then took out a pen and paper. "Are you sure you don't need me to?"

"I'll tell you when I do."

Evelyn lowered her gaze, looking at Alexander Vance.

Alexander nodded at her.

The two of them took Jane back to the small alley and then turned to leave.

Once in the car, Evelyn suddenly spoke. "That unknown number said the Sterling Family has already sent people to obstruct my task. Which part do you think they're trying to block? With the Evans family, there doesn't seem to be any trace of external interference."

As for Nathan White and Amelia White, whether Jane forgave the Evans family or not didn't really hinge on them.

Even without Nathan, the relationship between Jane and her family would be difficult to mend.

Alexander frowned. "The Cortez Sect definitely isn't a problem. You're the First Senior Sister; they can't cut ties with you. The Roland family seems calm on the surface. Chloe Roland follows your lead, Mr. and Mrs. Roland treat you like their own, and Ryan Roland is also fond of you..."

As he said this, Evelyn clearly detected a hint of something odd in his tone.

Evelyn coughed lightly. "Do I smell something sour?"

Alexander gave a soft humph and continued his analysis. "The obstacle with the Evans family is Jane. The connection with the Sherwood family lies with Mina Sherwood. Even though Mina has cut ties with her family, as long as she's around, a real separation is impossible. As for the Valentine family... how are things with your love-struck brother, Preston Valentine, now?"

Evelyn was taken aback. "Are you saying the opponent has targeted the Valentine family?"

Alexander shook his head. "Not sure. I'm just laying out the situation with each family for you. You're Mr. Valentine's daughter. On the surface, the Valentine family should be the most stable. But actually, among the seven Valentine brothers, they are the easiest to drive a wedge between."

He narrowed his eyes. "If I were your opponent, trying to sabotage your relationship with the five major families, I might start with the Valentine family."

Evelyn pressed her lips together. "How would they do it?"

Alexander looked at her. "The day we went shopping, was it really a coincidence we ran into Susan Langley?"

Evelyn froze.

Alexander said calmly, "I didn't think much of it before. It just seemed too coincidental that right after seeing Susan cheating, we found out she was your fifth brother's girlfriend. But thinking about it now..."

Evelyn immediately understood. "You mean this was arranged? To drive a wedge between me and Preston?"

Alexander nodded. "Could you really stand by and watch Preston be deceived without doing anything?"

Evelyn fell silent.

Alexander added, "Actually, in large families with many brothers, whether relationships remain harmonious after marriage often depends entirely on the wives."

Evelyn understood. "Men, bound by brotherhood, won't develop major conflicts. But after marriage, when they form their own small families, the relationships are maintained by the women. Sister-in-law dynamics are the hardest to navigate. Since I know Susan is no good, I can't possibly let her marry into the Valentine family. Otherwise, the household will be in constant turmoil! But if I accuse her without proof, Preston won't believe me, and it could create distance with the other brothers too. This really is a difficult problem! So, Susan is working for the other side?"

She felt a headache coming on.

She had only received one text message, informing her that enemies had come to the country. But she still didn't know who they were, and now the tasks she needed to complete were already in jeopardy!

Alexander spoke up. "If you want to know if Susan is working for them, we can go test it out."

Evelyn looked at him in surprise. "Test it where?"

Alexander didn't answer. He turned the car around.

Half an hour later.

In the surveillance room of New York's largest luxury mall.

Evelyn and Alexander watched until their eyes grew tired, but they couldn't find any footage of Susan and that man entering or leaving together.

The mall was huge. Because it housed high-end luxury brands, there were cameras everywhere. Yet, even so, they found nothing.

Evelyn frowned, looking at Alexander.

Alexander said calmly, "This Susan Langley is not simple. An ordinary person wouldn't have this capability. She either avoided all the cameras or found a way to erase herself from the surveillance footage. So, she is indeed a pawn of your unseen enemy."

Evelyn also felt a sense of dread. "It's a good thing I didn't stubbornly insist on dragging Preston to find evidence at the banquet that day. Otherwise, I might have already fallen out with him by now!"

Preston already deeply trusted Susan. If she had insisted on accusing Susan and then come to check the surveillance only to find no evidence...

Preston would definitely think she was targeting Susan.

Evelyn's head throbbed. "This is really tricky now."

Why were the people and situations around her always so complicated? Was it really this difficult to form bonds with the five major families?

As she was lost in thought, a mall staff member suddenly ran in. "Quick, look! Big news! Someone is about to jump off a building!"

A group of people gathered around. They turned on the television and switched to a live broadcast.

On the large screen, a man sat on the edge of a tall building's rooftop, his body swaying back and forth. A crowd gathered below, and rescue workers were trying to get closer.

But the man suddenly looked behind him and shouted sharply, "Don't come any closer! If you take another step, I'll jump!"

Seeing this person, Evelyn's pupils constricted sharply!

The man was none other than... Nathan White!!
