Chapter 555

Mason Evans's lie was completely torn apart.

His jawline tightened.

Finally, he looked at Evelyn Ross. "I can't say."

Evelyn was taken aback.

Mason spoke. "Some things, if spoken before you complete your mission, will truly put your mother's life in danger."

Evelyn frowned. "The video just now?"

"It was sent by my handler."

Mason sighed. "Evelyn, your sister thought hiding her abilities and living a stable life could help her avoid the Sterling Family's struggles. She was too naive. From the moment you and your mother were discovered by the Sterling Family, your sister was exposed. You should have sensed it, right? Your sister isn't foolish. She's very smart. Do you think the Sterling Family would allow someone that intelligent to evade the tasks they assign?"

Evelyn's brow furrowed tightly. "What do you mean?"

Mason took a step forward, coming to stand before her. He spoke bluntly. "I'm telling you, the Sterling Family has their eyes on you. From the moment you completed the second task, there was no turning back. Either you clear all the tasks and go to the Sterling Family to see your mother, or you fail, and they will erase your mother's existence. That video wasn't sent by me. It was sent by the Sterling Family! If you don't put in more effort, if you continue to slack off, they will choose to eliminate your mother."

Evelyn clenched her fists and let out a cold laugh. "Then let me tell you this too. If anything happens to my mother, I guarantee I will not complete any more tasks. I'll slack off completely."

Mason didn't expect her to counter-threaten him. He was momentarily stunned. "You..."

Evelyn scoffed. "Since the Sterling Family values me so much, or rather, values my sister, they should agree to this condition, right? Tell your handler my terms!"

Mason rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. "I don't know if they'll agree."

Evelyn lowered her gaze. "If they care about me, they'll agree. If they don't care about me, they wouldn't be using my mother to threaten and coerce me in the first place!"

Mason was speechless.

This logic was actually flawless.

He took a deep breath. "Alright, I'll communicate it."

But Evelyn added, "Also, I need confirmation that my mother is truly alive and well. I want them to send a video every day."

Mason paused. "They could film many videos at once and fake the dates to trick you."

Evelyn simply looked down. "Then let them figure out a way to prove the timestamps aren't fake."

Mason said, "...Evelyn, their patience is limited. Don't push their boundaries."

But Evelyn smiled confidently. "Just relay my conditions to your handler. He'll agree."

Mason was confused. "How do you know?"

"Because..."

Evelyn took a step back. "Since your handler wants me to complete the tasks, he will definitely meet my demands."

Mason was silent again.

He took another deep breath and nodded. "I'll relay it."

Evelyn looked directly at him. "So, what's the fourth task? Tell me now. Maybe I can complete the third and fourth tasks together."

Mason spoke. "The Castillo family has always existed outside the global economic system. If not for marriage alliances, they don't need to cooperate with anyone. So your third task is fundamentally impossible to complete. Evelyn, you..."

"That's not a problem for you to consider."

Evelyn said calmly, "Tell me the fourth task."

Mason sighed. "Defeat the Fox."

"Okay."

Evelyn nodded and turned to leave.

When she reached the door, Alexander Vance opened it.

The two of them walked out side by side.

Arriving at the parking lot, Alexander looked at her. "You already knew the guardian was this doctor?"

Evelyn replied, "It was just a guess. I returned to San Francisco once in my sister's identity years ago, right? I didn't see him then and thought he was away on a business trip."

Mason often traveled for work. Thinking about it now, his work in San Francisco was actually the business trip.

Evelyn gave a bitter smile.

She paused her steps and looked back at the building upstairs.

Sure enough, she saw Mason standing by the window, quietly gazing at her.

Seeing her look up, he waved in greeting.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow and waved back at him.

Alexander asked, "Is this person reliable?"

"I don't know."

Evelyn's answer was pragmatic. "I don't even know if what he just said is true or false. I only know one thing."

"What?"

"He genuinely liked my sister and wants to avenge her."

Evelyn looked at Alexander. "I never understood before why his gaze at me was always so complicated. Later, when I saw the photo, I thought he liked me and quietly distanced myself. Just now, when he spoke, there was a hint of madness. At least for now, we share the same goal: to avenge my sister."

Alexander nodded.

Then he asked, "What about Anthony Castillo? Are we really not going to do anything? If he gets engaged to Nicole Sterling tomorrow... you'll have no chance."

Evelyn's jaw tightened. "Let's go home first. We need to think about how to solve this problem."

"Okay."

Alexander instinctively got into the passenger seat.

Then the car slowly started and began driving on the road at thirty miles per hour.

Alexander was silent.

He glanced at Evelyn.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "What are you looking at me for? There are countless roads, but you only have one life! So safe driving is paramount, understand? Especially since my blood is precious. If I get injured and lose too much iron, I could die!"

Alexander was speechless again.

He couldn't help but turn to look out the car window.

He saw a bicycle overtake their car.

The cyclist curiously peered inside.

Upon seeing Evelyn in the driver's seat, the person showed a look of understanding. "A new female driver!"

Alexander turned his gaze back inside, feeling a tiny bit... embarrassed.

He coughed and looked at Evelyn again.

Evelyn asked, "Something to say?"

"No."

Evelyn was satisfied.

The two of them drove at thirty miles per hour for over an hour before finally reaching the Ashcroft residence.

Evelyn perfectly parked the car in the parking spot.

She got out and walked around the car once.

Then, as she turned to go upstairs, she saw Joanna Sterling cleaning with another housekeeper.

Joanna had rolled up her sleeves, revealing a scar on her arm.

The other housekeeper asked, "Joanna, how did you get that scar on your arm?"

Joanna pouted. "I got it years ago saving the Fifth Young Master. His car burned me!"
