Chapter 595
Nicole Sterling was escorted out of the vehicle by two officers.
She was taken directly to the interrogation room.
Evelyn Ross looked at Grace Lorenz.
Grace got straight to the point.
"Tell me what you need me to do."
Evelyn took a deep breath.
"I want to question her alone."
"But I don't want any record of it in the Special Operations Division files."
"Can you arrange that?"
Grace lowered her gaze, thinking for two seconds.
"I can."
"You're the victim."
"I'll give you ten minutes alone with her."
"Will this cause trouble for you?"
Evelyn asked.
Grace shook her head.
"You underestimate my background."
"If my father could transfer me here, it means he has influence in this department."
Evelyn was taken aback.
Was this the same rigid, by-the-book person she knew?
When had she become so flexible?
Grace saw her confusion and took a deep breath.
"Your 'cause of death' back in San Francisco... I've been investigating it."
"But you know what?"
"To this day, I have no leads."
Evelyn froze.
Grace continued.
"That body was..."
"My twin sister."
Evelyn answered directly.
"She died falling into the sea trying to save me."
"After I woke up, I lived using her identity."
"To regain custody of my daughter."
"And to find out who was trying to kill us back then."
Grace was silent for a moment.
"I checked all the surveillance footage."
"There was no trace."
"It was as if a mysterious force erased everything you experienced that day..."
"You just vanished into thin air."
"You died in the sea."
"As a forensic examiner, it was the first time I felt completely helpless."
Evelyn suddenly understood.
"So you came to New York."
"You joined the Special Operations Division?"
The New York Special Operations Division handled the nation's bizarre cases and special incidents.
Grace did not deny it.
"I didn't apply on my own."
"My father saw my confusion."
"He transferred me here."
"He also told me I couldn't be rigid."
"I had to learn to be flexible."
Grace looked at Evelyn.
"I kept thinking..."
"If I had been flexible back then, would you not have 'died'?"
"If, right after your incident, I had used some unconventional methods to preserve evidence or recordings..."
"Could I have caught the culprit?"
Her voice carried guilt.
"I'm sorry."
"I haven't found anything yet."
"But in the Special Operations Division, I've seen many cases."
"I've also learned about many secrets I never had access to before."
Evelyn's eyes reddened.
She patted Grace's shoulder.
"Thank you, you stubborn rule-follower."
Grace smiled.
"Don't thank me."
"After all, I haven't even cleared up your sister's death."
Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.
She gave Grace a light hug.
Grace's body stiffened.
Evelyn whispered.
"Thank you."
"My first friend in life."
Grace was her cherished friend.
They had walked side by side since middle school.
They had grown up together.
She was an old friend Evelyn had once lost and now found again.
Evelyn let go.
"Now, take me to see her."
"Okay."
Grace walked ahead.
"By the way, who do you want to investigate?"
"Being in the Special Operations Division, I might be able to find some information."
Evelyn said directly.
"Then help me check the archives."
"See if there's any record of a mysterious family."
"The Sterling Family."
Grace nodded.
"I'll go check now."
Grace led Evelyn into the interrogation room.
She shut off all monitoring equipment.
Then she turned and left for the archives.
She searched through the archives.
Records of ordinary Sterling families were all normal.
Clearly not the one Evelyn was looking for.
Grace paced between the archive shelves.
Her gaze suddenly fell on a dust-covered file folder.
On the cover of the folder, two words were written clearly.
"Sterling Family."
Grace's eyes lit up.
...
Meanwhile, the interrogation room door closed.
Evelyn looked at Nicole Sterling.
Nicole's eyes were panicked.
"What do you want?"
"I'm telling you, this is illegal detention!"
Evelyn walked up to her.
"Fox, remember our bet?"
"What?"
Evelyn said calmly.
"We agreed back then."
"If I won, you would tell me everything about the Sterling Family."
"Now, it's time for you to fulfill the bet."
Nicole's pupils contracted sharply.
She clenched her fists tightly.
She looked toward the door.
Evelyn's voice was calm.
"Five groups came to rescue you tonight."
"We intercepted all of them."
"Nicole, you have no choice."
Nicole gritted her teeth.
"Fine."
"I lost the bet fair and square."
"I'll tell you everything I know."
