Chapter 608
Evelyn rushed to her, eyes blazing with fury.
"Nicole! What is the meaning of this?!"
Nicole let out a derisive laugh, leaning back leisurely in her chair.
"All the medicine from the Castillo family is prepared by Fox. Did you really think the antidote was given to you by Old Mr. Castillo? How naive."
Her expression was calm, even somewhat relaxed, as her gaze swept over Evelyn.
"Killing Mr. Valentine—that was my pledge of allegiance to Fox."
Evelyn's pupils constricted sharply.
"You surrendered to Fox long ago?"
"Surrendered? Grace, it seems you've remembered something... Or were you just pretending to be clueless before?" Nicole raised an eyebrow, then gave a contemptuous smile.
"Never mind, it's not important. What matters is, even though I'm one of the Sterling Family heirs, I know my limits. I knew I couldn't defeat Fox, so I submitted my allegiance long ago."
She folded her hands on the table, leaning forward slightly.
"So, what if I'm arrested? As long as Fox wins, I can walk out of here openly and freely."
She lifted her chin, casting a haughty look around the interrogation room.
"Don't even think about getting any useful information out of me. Staying here actually lets me avoid that whole heir competition. For me, it's the perfect choice."
Evelyn clenched her fists, her knuckles turning white.
"Nicole, you killed my father. I will make you pay! Do you think hiding here means I can't touch you?"
Nicole scoffed disdainfully.
"What can you possibly do?"
Evelyn took a step forward, her voice icy.
"I can do plenty! Grace believes in justice and strict procedure. I don't! I can take you out of here, find a place, and kill you to avenge my father!"
Nicole looked as if she'd heard a joke.
"You people are all about proper justification. You think a few harsh words will scare me? This is your territory, yet you needed a legitimate reason to arrest me. Grace, do you really think I'd believe your nonsense?"
Evelyn seemed provoked by this, pointing at her, her voice trembling.
"You... you..."
Alexander immediately placed a hand on her shoulder, speaking softly to soothe her.
"Evelyn, please, calm down."
Beside them, Grace played along, putting on an angry expression.
"Grace, what is going on? Didn't you get the antidote? How could it be poison?"
Hearing this, Evelyn turned away abruptly.
Her shoulders shook slightly.
She lowered her head, her voice suppressed and pained.
"I don't know... That medicine was clearly given by Grandpa... Now the entire Valentine family blames me, blames Grandpa... The Valentines and the Castillos are about to become sworn enemies!"
Alexander glanced at her.
He noticed there were no tears at the corners of Evelyn's eyes.
She was clearly running out of acting steam and had turned away to hide it.
The corner of his mouth twitched.
He looked at Nicole.
Sure enough, he saw a look of schadenfreude on her face.
Alexander immediately spoke up.
"This is clearly Fox and Nicole's doing! What does it have to do with your grandfather?! The Valentines are being foolish! What possible benefit would your grandfather get from poisoning your father?"
Nicole couldn't resist chiming in.
"Of course there's a benefit. The Castillo family hesitated between me and Rabbit, and finally chose Rabbit. But joining Rabbit now is just adding flowers to the brocade. However, if Mr. Valentine is poisoned, Rabbit, you would have no choice but to rely entirely on the Castillos. That's the merit of supporting the true heir from the beginning! The final payoff is completely different!"
She looked at Evelyn, her eyes filled with mockery.
"All those families who know about the Sterling Family's existence and support an heir want to prove their worth in front of the heir, hoping to gain favor... Rabbit, that's exactly what your grandfather is thinking! He wants to weaken the Valentine family's control over you and make the Castillo family your most important backer!"
"Impossible! You're lying!"
Evelyn shouted angrily.
"Grandpa isn't that kind of person! The Valentines won't believe you either! Besides, the antidote was in your hands! You were the one scheming behind the scenes! What does it have to do with the Castillo family?!"
"Who said the antidote was in my hands?"
Nicole stared at Evelyn with arrogant resentment.
"The antidote was always with the Castillos. When I administered the poison initially, I borrowed it from the Castillo family. That box of his with the Seven-Day Scatter contains hundreds of combinations. The poison he gave me was in a white bottle. What color was the antidote he gave you?"
Evelyn whirled around, stunned.
"It was... pink..."
Nicole spread her hands.
"See? He deliberately gave you the pink one to poison Mr. Valentine! If you don't believe me, go search the Castillo residence for that white bottle. Compare the toxin levels in your father's body. Won't that make it clear?"
Evelyn's pupils shrank.
"A white bottle?"
"Exactly."
Nicole smiled, a smug expression on her face.
"I've truly accomplished a great deed for Fox. Rabbit, now you have to choose between the Castillo family and the Valentine family... You will forever lose the support of the other... Hahaha..."
But the next second, she saw the look of grief and indignation vanish from Evelyn's face.
Evelyn wiped away the two tears she had finally managed to squeeze out.
She let out a soft sigh.
"Now I suddenly realize how hard it must be for those actors."
