Chapter 618
After saying goodbye to Grace, Evelyn walked toward the parking lot.
Alexander was waiting for her by the car.
"Where to?"
"The Valentine residence."
Evelyn opened the car door and got in. Alexander started the engine.
On the road, Evelyn suddenly turned to look at him.
"You follow me every day. What about the Vance Group?"
"Thomas will handle it."
"What about the overseas companies?"
"I can manage those too."
Evelyn paused.
"What I mean is, you should go back to the company. It's not appropriate for the Chairman to be absent all the time."
Alexander kept his eyes on the road.
"Don't try to send me away. I won't leave your side for a moment."
Evelyn was taken aback, then smiled.
"You saw right through me."
Alexander's voice was low.
"You've backed the Fox into a corner. You're worried she'll lash out in desperation. I'm worried too."
Evelyn sighed.
"I underestimated the Sterling Family once, and my sister died in that incident. I dare not underestimate them again. If the Fox sends assassins, it will be hard to guard against."
She remembered the ship in San Francisco.
She and her sister had been kidnapped without a sound.
All surveillance had been destroyed, leaving no trace.
It was as if they had vanished and reappeared out of thin air.
The Sterling Family's power was unfathomable.
She was afraid Alexander would be implicated if he stayed with her.
But Alexander said, "That's exactly why I need to protect you personally."
Evelyn frowned.
"Grandmother's illness isn't better yet…"
"Evelyn, are you afraid?"
Evelyn was startled.
Alexander continued, "The Sterling Family is terrifying, yes. But if you let fear defeat you first, you've already lost."
Evelyn pressed her lips together.
"I'm not afraid of dying. I'm afraid of…"
"Do you know what I'm afraid of?"
"What?"
"I'm afraid you'll leave me again." Alexander tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "I'm afraid of the helplessness of not being by your side if something happens to you."
He drove with one hand and took her hand with the other.
"To hold your hand and grow old with you. You are my wife. In life and death, we stay together."
Evelyn's eyes grew warm.
She squeezed his hand back.
"Alright. In life and death, we stay together. We won't be apart."
The car entered the Valentine estate.
Mr. Valentine was still asleep.
After visiting him, they had just stepped out of the room when they saw Natalie Castillo coming through the door.
"Where's Spencer? Isn't school over?"
Evelyn looked at her and suddenly smiled.
"I don't know."
Natalie pouted.
"This guy asked me to wait for him, and he's not even back yet."
She took out her phone and sent a message.
Where are you? I'm at the Valentines'!
A voice came from downstairs.
"I'm back! Nat, come on, I'll take you to eat a state banquet!"
Natalie's eyes lit up, and she hurried downstairs.
"Really? Is it good?"
"Of course it's good! That hotel hosts foreign dignitaries. The chef used to be a royal chef…"
"Ah, I'm drooling already!"
The laughter of the young man and woman faded into the distance.
Alexander asked, "What's Chloe's full name?"
Evelyn lowered her gaze.
"On her ID, it's Sterling Yin."
"The same 'Sterling Yin' as Natalie Castillo?"
"Yes."
"What a coincidence."
"Yes, a coincidence."
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"I don't know if it's coincidence or intentional. The Sterling Family is too mysterious. All the clues don't connect. We have no idea what they're doing."
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Step by step, we will return to the Sterling Family and save Mom."
Alexander reassured her.
Evelyn nodded.
"After tomorrow is over, once the Fox and I settle our score, I should be able to pry Nicole's mouth open and get some answers."
Alexander put his arm around her shoulders.
"Yes. Looking forward to tomorrow."
…
The next day.
The time for the international organization to transfer the prisoner was unknown. Evelyn and Alexander arrived early at the Special Operations Division.
They first went to the interrogation room to see Nicole.
Under Grace's arrangements, Nicole had gone another night without sleep.
Her eyes were bloodshot, her spirit on the verge of collapse.
Seeing Evelyn, she sneered.
"You think torturing me like this will make me talk? Rabbit, all the girls of the Sterling Family have received special training. These methods are nothing! You've underestimated not only the Fox, but also me!"
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"Is that so?"
"Of course."
Nicole stared at her, her attitude arrogant.
"After today, I'll be taken away by the International Division. We won't see each other again! Do you really think you can keep me here?"
Evelyn looked at her.
"Let's make a bet."
"Bet on what?"
"If you are taken away by the International Division, I admit defeat. If not, you tell me all the Sterling Family's secrets."
Nicole scoffed.
"Deal."
