Chapter 645
Evelyn Ross froze for a moment, her eyes instantly welling up.
She stared at Benjamin Wright in shock, her throat tight as if blocked, a thousand words stuck in her heart, unsure where to begin.
This old man had dedicated his entire life to his country.
Evelyn understood that given the natures of Grace Lorenz and her father, even after bearing the stigma of "spies" for all these years, enduring public scorn, once they learned the truth, they would not harbor a shred of resentment towards the old man.
Grace would only feel that her grandfather had never let her down.
Evelyn firmly believed Grace was exactly that kind of person.
She clenched her fists, her gaze fixed intently on the old man.
Benjamin Wright spoke slowly, "Evelyn, right? Grace often mentioned you to me, said you were her best friend. But you must promise me something. Don't help her. If something happens to me, and my son and granddaughter receive protection instead, it will raise suspicions on Aldoria's side. It will be even harder for Professor Nathaniel Wright to return home. We cannot leave any potential risks for him."
Evelyn stared at him blankly, "Sir, is it worth it?"
Benjamin Wright smiled, "Professor Wright has overcome numerous technical challenges over the years, mastered many cutting-edge technologies, and nurtured over a hundred excellent scientists under his guidance. If they can return home one day, it will be a tremendous boost to our country's physics field... I'm just an old man nearing the end of my life. The only debt I owe is perhaps to my son and Grace. But they won't blame me. So, it's more than worth it."
Evelyn's eyes reddened, tears blurring her vision.
She pressed her lips together, looking at Benjamin Wright.
After a long moment, she finally said softly, "I understand."
Benjamin Wright nodded with relief, "Good girl, thank you."
He glanced at the fine tea on the table and sighed softly, "You are the First Senior Sister. Tell the others below to despise me when they see me from now on. And, don't send such good tea anymore. A spy doesn't deserve it."
After saying this, he smiled faintly, "I've been in charge of the Special Operations Division for so many years. I've long known this place is like a sieve, who knows how many have leaked in. The act must be convincing. So, child, promise me, keep this matter buried. Don't tell anyone."
Evelyn nodded solemnly.
Not to mention that Fox had placed two people within the Special Operations Division, the remaining Sterling Family forces had surely inserted others as well... Just the real Aldorian spies would never overlook this department.
The fewer people who knew about this, the better.
Evelyn took a deep breath, "I'll come see you again when I have time."
"Alright." Benjamin Wright leaned back on the sofa, looking out the window.
He had no phone, no television, no entertainment of any kind in the room. He could only watch the sunlight outside.
This eighty-year-old man, who perhaps slept very little already, would spend the rest of his life here...
Evelyn felt another lump in her throat, turned, and walked out the door.
Just as she stepped outside, she heard a clamor of hurried footsteps approaching. "Quick, rush in! I just saw that old spy drinking tea. How can we leave good tea for him? Confiscate it immediately!"
"This old bastard, daring to betray national interests, he deserves to die!"
"Old fool, living to such an age, doing something like this!"
"..."
The people in the Special Operations Division had all undergone rigorous vetting. Their moral character was exemplary, and patriotism was etched into their bones.
Therefore, even Benjamin Wright, whom they had once respected, once he became a "spy," they would show no mercy in their contempt and scorn!
Evelyn stood frozen, watching this group rush into the room, turning everything inside upside down, yet she could only stand there helplessly. She took a deep breath, wanting to say something, but saw the old man shake his head slightly.
Evelyn was instantly filled with an indescribable emotion.
She didn't know what to do, only feeling so distressed she wanted to cry, her nose stinging.
The white-haired old man just stood there quietly, watching as his brushes, rice paper, his most beloved calligraphy works... were taken away one by one.
Even the sofa was removed, leaving only a bare, hard bed...
Yet in his eyes, there was only compassion and tranquility.
Evelyn clenched her jaw, forcing herself to turn away, not to look at this desolate scene of the old man in his twilight years.
But she knew the old man remained utterly calm. Someone who had weathered too many storms had long found peace within.
Evelyn gritted her teeth and walked quickly outside, as if walking any slower would make it impossible to cross the hurdle in her heart.
Just as she stepped out the main door, she saw Marcus Wright standing ahead, his face filled with anger.
Seeing Marcus Wright, Evelyn paused slightly.
Marcus Wright was sneering coldly, "No wonder the old man stubbornly refused to step down. Turns out he was clinging to this position to act as a spy and line his own pockets!"
