Chapter 648
Evelyn Ross's gaze snapped toward the room where Benjamin Wright was being held.
Her brow furrowed tightly.
A group of people rushed over.
They hauled Benjamin Wright out of the room.
He was thrown directly into the center of the courtyard.
Everyone from the Special Operations Division immediately surrounded him.
They looked at Benjamin Wright, their expressions complex and difficult to describe.
Benjamin Wright was their former leader.
He was also their idol.
But what Benjamin Wright had done made them feel utterly ashamed.
They even felt that their lifelong pursuits were like a joke.
Benjamin Wright's personal achievements were posted on the department's honor wall.
Everyone, including Marcus Wright, held him in the highest respect.
They took pride in him.
Who could have imagined that this pillar of stability would have such a flaw?
Once, the department had held an internal vote on who was least likely to be a spy.
Benjamin Wright had come in first by a landslide.
Yet reality was so bitterly ironic.
Everyone stared at Benjamin Wright, wanting to say something, but the words wouldn't come.
Benjamin Wright's graying hair trembled slightly in the wind.
He had supported and encouraged them through countless missions.
Despite his advanced age, he had undertaken numerous dangerous operations.
He had always charged forward bravely.
Who could have imagined that such an idol-like figure would do such a thing?
The scene fell into silence.
Grace Lorenz rushed forward and supported Benjamin Wright.
She cried out, "Grandpa!"
Benjamin Wright sighed. "I've dragged you into this."
Grace's eyes reddened, tears streaming down her face.
She looked at Benjamin Wright, her feelings a tangled mess.
She hated traitors.
But when that traitor was her own family...
Reason told her she should still hate him.
But her living, breathing grandfather was right here.
She choked back a sob. "Grandpa! How could you do something like that..."
Benjamin Wright sighed again. "I was wrong."
Grace looked at him, feeling utterly powerless.
Benjamin Wright turned to Marcus Wright. "Follow the rules. Do what must be done."
Marcus Wright stared at the old man, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
He had admired him for a lifetime.
He had resented him for twenty years.
Now, Benjamin Wright had finally fallen.
The "Deputy" before his title of Director would finally be removed.
But suddenly, it all felt meaningless.
Marcus Wright lowered his gaze. "Old man, don't blame me for being harsh. For you, our rules must be even stricter. I can spare Grace, but I cannot spare you. So, accept our punishment and scorn."
He pointed ahead. "Everyone, line up!"
The people from the Special Operations Division immediately moved into action.
They formed a long line.
The queue stretched from in front of Benjamin Wright all the way to the courtyard gate.
Benjamin Wright stood at the head of the line, looking at these people.
Evelyn clenched her fists tightly.
Just then, her phone rang.
It was a video call.
Evelyn frowned.
She saw it was from Natalie Castillo.
She answered the call.
Natalie Castillo's smiling face appeared on the screen. "Evelyn, I'm calling because I suddenly remembered something I didn't tell you..."
Evelyn frowned. "What is it?"
Natalie spoke. "Well... Benjamin Wright isn't actually a spy. He and Professor Nathaniel Wright were in cahoots. They planned it together long ago, working from inside and out. Professor Nathaniel Wright was supposed to return to the country in about a year, bringing his research results and his entire scientific team."
Her tone was casual.
As if she were commenting on the nice weather.
But hearing this, Evelyn's pupils constricted sharply.
She immediately pressed, "How do you know this?"
Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so you already know? You're not as weak as I imagined!"
She tilted her head and smiled. "Since you know the truth, then Evelyn, you must be facing the most difficult choice right now, aren't you? I called to remind you. Those of us competing for the heir position went through this kind of training in the Sterling Family long ago. We know when to make what kind of sacrifice. So today, I'm giving you this lesson."
Evelyn was stunned.
