Chapter 679

Julian Evans was confused. "What do you mean?"

Alexander Vance remained silent.

But Evelyn Ross understood instantly.

The day Eleanor Vance passed away would be the day the eldest branch was expelled from the Vance family. Richard Evans's bankruptcy was already a foregone conclusion...

Before, Alexander might have felt some guilt towards his grandmother, given that he was about to move against the eldest branch. But now...

Evelyn looked at Julian.

When Alexander suddenly suggested they invest in Julian together earlier, she had grasped his intention—the eldest branch would not be completely destroyed.

Because the eldest branch still had Julian.

By transferring the shares that rightfully belonged to the eldest branch to Julian, everything would be neatly resolved.

Unfortunately, Julian hadn't understood...

Evelyn's thoughts drifted as the car left that street. They stopped at a place convenient for Julian to hail a taxi. After dropping him off, she and Alexander drove back to the Vance estate.

Making money and building a career were important, but spending time with family was equally vital.

Both of them, without needing to discuss it, decided to postpone their work for the next month. They would make time to be with Eleanor.

The car came to a stop in the parking lot. The two of them walked towards Eleanor Vance's courtyard...

Before they even reached the gate, Richard Evans suddenly appeared in front of Evelyn. He frowned deeply, staring at her. "Are you Evelyn Ross? I just heard you say something to Julian about 'old classmates'?"

He had been too angry earlier to process it, but now he remembered this person was Grace Valentine. That phrase "old classmates" felt more and more off the more he thought about it.

Evelyn looked at him with a faint, knowing smile. "Big Brother, are you really that unwilling to let it go?"

"What?"

"Your son didn't listen to you. Are you really that hung up on it?"

Richard's face changed dramatically. "Hung up on what? Don't talk nonsense!"

"Not hung up? I saw you obsessing over those few sentences I said just now. I thought you were replaying the argument because you felt you didn't win earlier!"

Richard: !!

He was replaying it, trying to figure out why that ungrateful son would choose Grace Valentine's investment over his!

The eldest branch of the Vance family held thirty percent of the Vance Group's shares. Those shares were worth hundreds of billions! And Julian had given them all up?

For Grace Valentine's measly investment?

That ungrateful son must have been bewitched by this little vixen again!

So, this little vixen was actually Evelyn Ross?

Richard, after all, was no ordinary person. He wouldn't be so easily sidetracked by Evelyn's words. He sneered coldly. "You are Evelyn Ross, aren't you?"

Evelyn replied calmly, "I am Grace Valentine. I have a daughter named Natalie. My father is Mr. Valentine. What? Are you conducting a census, Big Brother?"

Richard frowned tightly. "Then what was that about 'old classmates' you said to Julian!"

"You misheard."

"I..."

Evelyn ignored him and walked straight into Eleanor Vance's room with Alexander.

As soon as they entered, they heard a delicate, tinkling laugh.

A timid, weak voice was saying, "Grandmother, I come from a poor family. I haven't seen much of the world. Please don't blame me..."

Then Cecilia Evans's voice chimed in. "Mom, Great-Grandmother is very kind. She won't blame you!"

The timid voice continued, "But Grandmother was just asking me to leave earlier, wasn't she? Isn't that blaming me?"

Cecilia immediately looked at Eleanor Vance. "Great-Grandmother, this is my mother's first time at the Vance estate. Please don't scold her. She's had a hard life before and hasn't seen many nice things. She just made a little mistake. You won't be angry, right?"

Eleanor was utterly bewildered by these words.

What kind of manipulative talk was this?

Early this morning, these two had inexplicably shown up in her courtyard, insisting on chatting with her.

Then this mistress started her manipulative spiel, saying she didn't have much jewelry, that after all these years with Richard Evans, no elder had ever given her a gift, and she felt she wasn't good enough for Richard.

Eleanor had found it laughable at the time and retorted bluntly, "Then go ask Richard's father for things! What's the point of complaining to me about your grievances?"

It was just one sentence, and now this mistress was here, weeping and wailing!

Saying Eleanor looked down on her...

Saying she came from a poor family... Cecilia, the illegitimate daughter, chimed in beside her. The two of them went back and forth, making it seem as if Eleanor had bullied them.

By now, it sounded as if not giving her a few pieces of jewelry was some kind of monumental sin.

How could such people exist in the world?!

Eleanor frowned deeply, feeling a throbbing headache. The whimpers and sobs of the mother-daughter pair filled her ears, grating on her nerves.

Just then, Evelyn and Alexander strode through the door.

Seeing them, Eleanor's eyes lit up as if she had seen her saviors.
