Chapter 862
The words of Astrid Sterling were not necessarily trustworthy.
But Evelyn Ross had no time.
Every member of the Sterling Family was shrouded in mist. Unraveling the truth was as difficult as climbing to the heavens.
She had no choice but to believe.
Even if there was only a sliver of hope.
The next day, Evelyn began making arrangements.
This trip was completely different from the last.
Last time, there was a return date.
This time, there was none.
Only two outcomes awaited her—either she would emerge alive, or she would remain there forever.
At noon, Evelyn had lunch with Mr. Valentine.
They ate in silence.
Neither spoke.
Just as Evelyn stood up to leave, Mr. Valentine suddenly spoke. "You're going to save her, aren't you?"
Evelyn's steps faltered.
Mr. Valentine looked at her. "Evelyn, can I go?"
Evelyn shook her head. "No."
Mr. Valentine knew nothing about the Sterling Family.
Too many people would make the target too large.
Moreover... Mr. Valentine was impulsive and decisive in action. If he saw her mother, Sophia Ashcroft, he might charge forward recklessly.
That would ruin all their plans.
More importantly...
Evelyn looked at him. "Dad, if I don't come back, and Mom doesn't come back either, at least there will still be someone in this world who remembers us."
Mr. Valentine's eyes instantly reddened.
He stared at Evelyn for a long time.
Finally, he gave her shoulder a firm pat. "Come back alive."
Evelyn's heart trembled.
She clenched her fist and nodded. "Okay."
She turned and strode out.
Mr. Valentine watched her retreating figure, his voice choked. "Evelyn, I'll be waiting at home for you to return. At the very least... you must come back."
If Sophia Ashcroft truly couldn't return.
He, Mr. Valentine, wouldn't mind going to be with her.
But their daughter must live!
Evelyn didn't dare look back.
Her eyes stung.
She waved a hand behind her back to Mr. Valentine, opened the car door, and got in.
Alexander Vance was already waiting inside.
Seeing her red-rimmed eyes, he took her hand. "It's alright. We'll come back."
Evelyn nodded. "I know."
She didn't go to say goodbye to anyone else.
She didn't want to worry everyone.
She only left a message at home, saying she was away on a business trip.
That's what anyone who asked was to be told.
But when she returned home, she saw Mina Sherwood and Marcus Valentine sitting in the living room.
Mina's belly was very large now.
Almost seven months.
She would give birth in a few more months.
Evelyn was pleasantly surprised. "What brings you here?"
Mina walked over and took her hand. "The baby said they missed their godmother, so we came to see you."
Evelyn smiled and gently touched Mina's belly.
After a moment's thought, she took out a card and handed it to Mina. "This is a gift for the baby."
It was on behalf of her sister, Grace Sterling.
After all, Mina and Grace had once been best friends.
Mina was slightly taken aback.
But she didn't refuse, accepting the card. "Then I'll accept it on the baby's behalf. But the baby says they want to see you at their full-month celebration."
Evelyn froze.
Marcus Valentine smiled. "Even if you don't say you're leaving, I am your older brother after all. I'd find out eventually. Whatever you're going to do, have a smooth journey."
Evelyn nodded.
Mina looked at her. "Are you going to fulfill her wish?"
Her...
Mina had sensed something long ago.
Evelyn knew that she and her sister had different personalities. Mina must have noticed.
They had avoided talking about it before.
This was the first time Mina had spoken so directly.
Evelyn nodded. "Yes."
Her sister's wish had always been to live.
To live well.
So she must survive, together with their mother!
Mina smiled. "Alright, Evelyn. I'll be here praying for you."
Evelyn also smiled. "Thank you."
Mina stood up. "Then we'll be going now."
"Okay."
After the two left, Evelyn sat on the sofa and looked at Alexander.
She was about to speak.
Noisy voices came from outside the door.
"Hey, I came in first."
"It was clearly me!"
Evelyn looked up.
She saw Chloe Roland walking in first, leading the way.
