Chapter 515
Evelyn Ross and Alexander Vance sped through the night.
Their car cut a streak of light through the darkness.
They parked at the mouth of the alley and rushed into the Evans' small courtyard.
The aroma of simmering soup wafted from the kitchen.
John Evans was tending to the stove and turned at the sound.
"Grace? Mr. Vance? What brings you here?"
Evelyn scanned the room.
"Where's Jane?"
"Jane went to the Evans mansion." John wiped his hands. "She said she needed to talk to Mrs. Evans. She just left."
Evelyn frowned.
Alexander's voice was low.
"Did she go alone?"
"Yes." John sensed the tension. "What's wrong?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
She turned to Alexander.
"To the Evans mansion."
They hurried out of the courtyard.
...
Outside the Evans mansion gates.
Amelia White led Nathan White out of the villa, a satisfied smile on her face.
"Son, I'm doing this for your own good." She patted Nathan's shoulder. "You'll understand later."
Nathan kept his head down, his steps heavy.
He clenched his fists, his voice hoarse.
"Mom, I really can't let Jane go."
"You have to let her go!" Amelia's face darkened. "This is not up for discussion!"
She dragged Nathan toward the parking lot.
Nathan moved like a soulless puppet, letting himself be pulled.
The car started.
Nathan stared out the window, his eyes empty.
Just as the car was about to exit the gates, he spotted a familiar figure.
"Stop the car!"
Amelia also saw Jane and snapped, "Don't stop!"
"If you don't stop, I'll jump!"
Nathan yanked the car door open.
The car screeched to a halt.
Nathan rushed out and ran to Jane.
"Jane, what are you doing here?"
Jane took out the notebook she always carried and began to write.
[I came to see Mrs. Evans. I am...]
Before she could finish, a hand shot out and snatched the notebook away.
Amelia stood before them, her face livid.
"Are you pestering my son again?" She raised her hand and slapped Jane across the face. "You little tramp, have you no shame?"
The sharp sound of the slap cut through the night.
Jane covered her cheek, her eyes instantly welling up.
Nathan shoved his mother aside and shielded Jane.
"Mom! What are you doing?!"
"What am I doing?" Amelia sneered. "What's wrong with hitting her? Do you want to hit me back?"
She thrust her face toward Nathan.
"Go on! Hit me right here!"
Nathan trembled with anger.
"How could I ever hit you?!"
"Then stay out of my way!"
Amelia grabbed Nathan's arm and pulled him aside.
She turned her glare on Jane.
"See? My son came here today to meet Miss Evans!" Her tone was venomous. "Mrs. Evans has already agreed! Miss Evans is very pleased with my son! Just give up!"
Jane was stunned.
Miss Evans was pleased?
When had she ever said that?
She waved her hands frantically, trying to explain, but Amelia gave her no chance.
"What? A mute dares to come to the Evans mansion?" Amelia scoffed. "Did you see us here and come to beg me to put in a good word for you?"
Jane shook her head desperately.
Nathan watched Jane's pale face, his heart aching as if cut by a knife.
"Mom." His voice choked. "If you can help Jane... I'll do anything you say."
Amelia's eyes lit up.
"Really? If I plead for her, you'll break up with her and focus on being with Miss Evans?"
Nathan closed his eyes, tears falling.
Jane's tears streamed down as she reached out to wipe Nathan's face.
Nathan took her hand and held her in a tight, brief embrace.
Then he let go and pushed her away.
"Mom." His voice shook. "I promise. If you help Jane, I'll break up with her and be with Miss Evans."
Amelia studied her son for a long moment, then finally sighed.
"Fine. I'll take you back to see Mrs. Evans." She looked at Jane. "But you wait outside. Don't dirty the Evans' floor."
Jane nodded vigorously.
If she could just see Mrs. Evans, everything could be cleared up.
The three of them turned and walked back toward the Evans villa.
The night deepened.
The villa's lights shone brightly in the darkness.
Evelyn and Alexander's car was also speeding in this direction.
