Chapter 711
Richard Evans saw Julian Evans fall silent, a mocking curve lifting the corner of his mouth.
"Weren't you just adamantly saying no a moment ago?"
"Why are you mute now?"
"I'm warning you, if you want to back out, this is your last chance!"
Julian slowly raised his eyelids.
"I said no because..."
He paused, his tone flat and unemotional.
"The City Hall cannot process a divorce and a marriage on the same day."
"Dad, don't you even know such basic common sense?"
Richard's face darkened instantly.
His earlier smugness vanished without a trace.
He glared at Julian, his voice thick with suppressed anger.
"What kind of attitude is this?!"
Julian's expression remained unchanged.
"I'm merely stating a fact."
Richard took a deep breath, his chest heaving.
"Fine, just fine!"
"You ungrateful son!"
"I'll drive you and your mother out of the Vance family for good today!"
He threw down the harsh words, turned, and strode out with large steps.
Julian said nothing and followed.
Lillian Evans and Cecilia Evans exchanged a glance, then looked at Eleanor Vance.
In the end, they both chose to follow Richard.
The divorce was of utmost importance to them.
Only after the divorce could they marry legitimately.
Only then could Cecilia shed her status as a love child and become a proper Miss Vance.
Julian walked up to Evelyn Ross and stopped.
"The Board of Directors meeting..."
He hesitated, unsure how to request leave.
After all, the company currently only had the two of them as directors.
Richard had already turned back impatiently, urging him on.
"What's the holdup? Looking for another excuse not to go?"
"What important Board meeting could your little startup possibly have!"
Julian's brow furrowed slightly.
"I meant, postpone the Board meeting."
"I'll accompany my mother to the City Hall first."
Evelyn nodded.
"That's fine."
"We can schedule a time after you're done."
As she spoke, she looked at Alexander Vance and Eleanor.
They had previously agreed to spend quality time with the elderly lady.
It was best for her to minimize going out as well.
Evelyn added to Julian.
"After you're done, come to the house to report on company matters."
Eleanor had affection for this great-grandson.
In her final days, having Julian visit more often would be a comfort to her.
Sure enough, as soon as Evelyn finished speaking, a flicker of barely perceptible delight passed through Eleanor's eyes.
Though the expression was fleeting, Evelyn caught it keenly.
She sighed softly in her heart.
An elder's concern for their descendants was ultimately something they couldn't let go of.
Julian understood Evelyn's intention.
He looked at Eleanor and nodded solemnly.
"Alright."
"I'll come report the company's situation to you every day from now on."
He too could see that the elderly lady's time was limited.
Every extra day he could spend with her counted.
After bidding farewell to Eleanor, Julian followed Richard out of the Vance residence.
Richard's car was parked in the lot.
They all walked out together.
On the way, Cecilia glanced at Julian and suddenly let out a light laugh.
"Julian, you're going to come keep Great-Grandmother company every day from now on?"
"You're not eyeing the shares in Great-Grandmother's hands, are you?"
Richard snorted dismissively upon hearing this.
"Him?"
"How would the old lady ever give him her shares!"
"The old lady has never looked favorably upon our branch of the family."
"You and your mother have been fawning over her every day. Have you ever gotten a single smile?"
"Such useless effort. I think he's just looking for an excuse to return to the Vance family."
Julian's face tightened, but he didn't respond.
They reached the parking lot.
Richard stood by his luxury car, eyeing Julian sideways.
"You're just starting out. You don't even have a car."
"Let's see how you plan to get to the City Hall!"
As soon as the words left his mouth, he saw Julian pull a bus pass from his pocket.
"I came by bus."
"Naturally, I'll leave by bus."
Richard was stunned.
"You actually took the bus?"
Julian gave a slight tug at the corner of his mouth.
"Others can ride it. Why can't I?"
"Dad, I told you, I won't rely on you anymore from now on."
"So, please don't interfere in my life anymore either."
With that, he turned and walked straight away.
Richard watched his straight-backed figure, fury burning in his chest.
"That little bastard!"
"He just wants me to feel sorry for him!"
"With his attitude, how could I possibly feel sorry!"
"What sin did I commit in a past life to have such an unfilial son!"
Cecilia immediately linked her arm with his, soothing him softly.
"Daddy, you still have me and Mom."
Richard finally caught his breath.
"Yes, I still have you."
He pulled open the car door and got in.
"Let's go, straight to the City Hall."
"Let's see if the mother can be as tough as her oh-so-principled son!"
He gave a cold laugh.
Julian was grown, his rebellious phase coming a bit late. It wasn't strange for him to clash with the family.
But Margaret Evans definitely wouldn't dare to actually go through with the divorce!
He could almost predict the scene that would follow.
Either Margaret would call soon, saying she had no transportation and couldn't go...
Or they'd get to the City Hall, and she'd say she forgot her ID...
In short, the divorce definitely wouldn't happen today.
Richard thought smugly, stepping on the gas and heading for the City Hall.
Upon arrival, as expected, there was no sign of Margaret or Julian.
He immediately dialed Margaret's number.
"Where are you?"
"Don't tell me you don't dare to come?"
As soon as he spoke, hurried footsteps sounded from around the corner.
"Coming, coming!"
Richard whipped his head around.
He saw Margaret Evans, nearly fifty, wearing a pair of sneakers, steadily parking a shared bicycle right in front of him.
