Chapter 720
Elder Howard Vance frowned deeply.
"Nonsense!"
Richard Evans immediately chimed in.
"Second Grandfather, you don't understand. Margaret Evans and Julian Evans are only after my money! Lillian and Cecilia are the ones who truly care for me. Look, since they arrived, how harmonious my relationship with Grandmother has become? It's all their doing! They are filial and attentive to the Madam, a hundred times better than Margaret and Julian!"
Elder Howard's expression darkened instantly.
But now was not the time to dwell on the affairs of the main branch.
He turned his attention back to Eleanor Vance.
"Sister-in-law, how have you been feeling lately?"
Eleanor Vance smiled gently.
"Quite well, Second Brother. Don't worry."
Elder Howard walked over and sat down beside Eleanor.
The two began to chat about family matters.
Most of the time, Elder Howard did the talking.
Eleanor listened quietly, a gentle smile always on her face.
For a moment, Elder Howard felt as if he had returned to his childhood.
He was that little boy who always followed his elder sister-in-law around.
An elder sister-in-law is like a mother.
To him, Eleanor Vance was just like a mother...
He keenly sensed that Eleanor's time was limited.
A wave of sorrow washed over his heart.
After they had talked for a long while, Robert Vance finally spoke.
"Second Uncle, your timing is perfect. We were just about to discuss revising Mother's will. With you here, you can serve as a witness. Moreover, with you presiding, that boy Alexander should behave himself."
Robert Vance had specifically invited Elder Howard for this purpose.
Amending a will was something they could usually discuss with the lawyer alone.
But without Elder Howard's authority to keep things in check, if Alexander Vance opposed it, they would be powerless to resist.
Alexander had grown up in the old mansion.
He held a deep respect for Elder Howard.
With him present, Alexander would at least show some deference.
Thinking this, Robert Vance glanced at Alexander.
Alexander sat there calmly and silently.
Elder Howard frowned and looked at him.
"How do you plan to change it?"
Robert Vance cleared his throat.
"Mother's assets should naturally be left to me, her son! I am the first in line to inherit."
Once the shares were in Robert Vance's hands, they would ultimately belong to Richard Evans!
Richard Evans thought gleefully to himself.
Elder Howard shook his head.
"That... doesn't seem appropriate, does it? I recall Sister-in-law said before that her shares would all go to Alexander Vance."
"That was in the past," Robert Vance interrupted directly.
"As you can see, now Alexander and his wife show no filial piety at all! Mother doesn't even recognize them anymore! The will must be changed. We can't let the filial children and grandchildren be treated unfairly, right?"
Elder Howard frowned deeply and looked at Alexander Vance.
"Is that really the case?"
Alexander Vance lowered his gaze and did not answer.
In his heart, failing to be by his grandmother's side day and night was his fault.
But Evelyn Ross refused to let him be wronged without cause.
She immediately retorted.
"How could that be? Second Grandfather, you know better than anyone how Alexander has treated Grandmother!"
Elder Howard nodded.
"Yes, Alexander has always been the most filial to Sister-in-law..."
Robert Vance sighed.
"That's all in the past. Since he got married, his eyes are only for his wife. Where is this family in his heart? Forget about me, even Mother goes weeks without seeing him... Otherwise, why would she remember everyone else but forget him?"
Elder Howard's brow remained tightly furrowed.
After the Vance family moved from San Francisco to New York, he had paid little attention to the affairs of the Vance Group.
His information was not well-informed.
He wasn't entirely clear about what had happened in New York.
So he looked at Eleanor Vance again.
"Sister-in-law, do you really not recognize Alexander? It's him!"
Eleanor Vance followed Elder Howard's pointing finger and looked at Alexander Vance again.
The same gentle smile remained on her face.
Her gaze was as kind and loving as before.
She stared at Alexander Vance for a long time before speaking slowly.
"I don't recognize him."
Elder Howard was stunned.
Richard Evans grew excited.
"Second Grandfather, you see? Now you know who truly cares for Grandmother, right?"
Elder Howard's jaw tightened.
"Sister-in-law is ill, confused. Under such circumstances, it's even more inappropriate to change the will..."
"Why not? Before, she was monopolized by Alexander Vance, so she wasn't close to us. But Robert and I are her son and grandson after all. How could she not care for us? Second Uncle, you have younger generations in your family too. Your heart is made of flesh. Would you really give all your shares to one grandson and ignore the others?"
These words gave Elder Howard pause.
He frowned, genuinely somewhat swayed.
He directly asked Eleanor Vance.
"Sister-in-law, your will... do you want to change it?"
