Chapter 757

Mia Truman reached to remove her earpiece.

Her fingertips had just brushed her ear when Evelyn Ross pressed down on her hand.

"Don't move."

Evelyn's voice was soft, yet carried an undeniable force.

Mia still wanted to struggle.

But clear conversation was already coming through the earpiece.

Chloe Raymond's voice was sugary sweet, laced with a hint of a whine. "Liam, what is she doing here again? It's so annoying. She's like a bad penny."

Liam Cooper chuckled lightly, his tone dripping with feigned helplessness. "What else? She's just here to see me... People like her, after being a doormat for so long, really start to believe they matter. I ignore her, and she still doesn't get the hint."

Chloe giggled. "Liam, you're just too charming. But if it were me, I'd have fired her ages ago. Isn't her mom just a maid in your house? Keeping someone like that around is so gross."

Liam paused before speaking. "Her mother has worked for my family for many years..."

"But you can't just indulge her like this, can you?" Chloe's voice rose slightly. "Letting her drive your car, use your credit cards, clinging to you all the time. Liam, you're just too soft-hearted."

Evelyn turned her head to look at Mia.

She herself was wearing a Bluetooth earpiece, listening quietly.

Mia's face had paled. Her lips were pressed tightly together.

"It's not like that," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Liam said... he didn't want Chloe to know about his current situation... He said he wanted to return in glory, to give Chloe a surprise."

Evelyn let out a derisive snort.

She didn't speak. She merely lifted her chin, gesturing for Mia to keep listening.

The earpiece fell silent for a moment.

Then, Chloe's voice came through again, tinged with probing curiosity. "Do you remember what tomorrow is?"

Liam immediately laughed, his tone so gentle it could drip honey. "Of course I remember. How could I forget such an important day?"

Evelyn looked at Mia. "What's tomorrow?"

Mia lowered her eyes.

Her long eyelashes fluttered faintly.

"It's Chloe's birthday," she said softly.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

Mia continued, her voice flat. "Every year on this day, Liam spends Chloe's birthday with her. I booked the venue in advance. I topped up the card. He never lets me be there. He says Chloe would be upset."

She spoke calmly.

But Evelyn heard the bitterness beneath that calm.

Liam's voice came through the earpiece again.

"It's the anniversary of the day we met three years ago," he said, his voice full of nostalgia. "Chloe, time flies. In the blink of an eye, we've been together for three years."

Evelyn's head snapped towards Mia.

Mia also looked up.

Her eyes were wide open, her pupils contracting slightly.

"How long have you known Liam?" Evelyn asked.

Mia's lips moved.

It took a long moment before sound emerged. "Three and a half years."

Her voice was very light, almost inaudible.

Evelyn smiled.

That smile held both mockery and pity.

"So," she began slowly, each word like a needle piercing Mia's heart, "this Chloe Raymond is Liam's girlfriend from back home? She's the one who saved up money to put him through school? Mia Truman, haven't you figured it out yet?"

Mia's body began to tremble.

She clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deep into her palms.

"He saved you, found out you were the Truman family heiress, and got together with you," Evelyn's voice was cold, like winter ice. "But during the time he was with you, he cheated. You were never the other woman. The real other woman is that Chloe Raymond. Oh no, perhaps Chloe was also cheated on. Because she has no idea what your relationship with Liam is. In her eyes, you're just the child of a maid in Liam's house. A persistent, annoying pursuer."

Evelyn paused.

She looked at Mia's pale face, enunciating each word clearly. "Mia Truman, do you understand now? This Liam Cooper has been lying to you from the very beginning. He's a complete and utter scumbag."

Mia shook her head.

She shook it desperately, tears welling in her eyes.

"I don't believe it..." Her voice choked up. "Liam saved my life... How could he be that kind of person..."

Evelyn didn't speak.

She just watched Mia quietly.

Chloe's voice sounded again in the earpiece.

"So, how are we celebrating tomorrow?" Chloe asked, her voice brimming with anticipation. "Did you get me a gift? And that idiot Mia Truman won't be there, right? I don't want her ruining our anniversary."

Liam laughed. "Don't worry, I definitely won't let her come. I'm so sick of her. If it weren't for her mother working for my family for so long, I'd have kicked her out ages ago."

Mia's body jolted violently.

She lifted her head, looking towards the distant booth.

Liam was sitting sideways to them, one arm draped over Chloe's shoulder, smiling with tender affection.

That smile... Mia had seen it countless times before.

Every time Liam smiled at her, she felt like her whole world lit up.

But now...

That smile felt like a knife, plunging deep into her heart.

"It's not like this..." Mia murmured to herself. "He clearly said... He said he was grateful to my mother, that I was the most important person to him..."

Evelyn gripped her wrist.

The grip was strong, almost enough to crush bone.

"So, do you see clearly now?" Evelyn's voice was icy. "You mean nothing to him. He got close to you only for your money, for the Truman family's resources."

Mia kept shaking her head.

Tears finally fell, scalding as they traced her cheeks.

"It's impossible... He saved my life..."

At that moment.

Chloe's next sentence came through the earpiece.

"Hmph, I really don't understand," Chloe's voice carried a note of dissatisfaction. "Since you hate her so much, since you want to get rid of her, why not just fire her? Or... have someone take care of her for good. You even bribed Diana to tamper with the car. And the result? She's still perfectly fine."

Mia's entire body froze.

Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared into the distance.

Diana...

Her mother's best friend.

Also an old servant in the Cooper household.

A few days ago, the brakes on her car suddenly failed. She almost crashed.

Diana checked it and said it was just worn-out parts, telling her to be more careful driving.

She believed it.

She had never doubted it.

Liam's voice sounded in the earpiece.

Carrying a hint of sinister coldness.

"Don't rush," he said. "If it didn't work this time, there's always next time. Firing her is letting her off too easy. She'll definitely keep bothering us. Might as well go all the way and finish it cleanly."

Mia's breathing stopped.

She looked at Liam.

At the man she had loved for three and a half years.

At the person she thought she would spend her life with.

Right now, he was gently holding another woman, yet his mouth was uttering words about ending her life.

Her world crumbled in that instant.

All her faith, all her love, all her resolve.

Shattered into dust.

Evelyn released her hand.

"Now, do you believe it?" she asked.

Mia didn't answer.

She just sat there dazedly, tears streaming silently.

In the earpiece, Liam and Chloe's conversation continued.

They were discussing where to celebrate tomorrow.

Talking about what gifts to buy.

Mocking Mia's stupidity and ridiculousness.

Every word was like a whip lashing against Mia's heart.

Lashing until it was raw and bloody.

A long time passed.

Mia slowly removed the earpiece.

Her movements were slow, gentle.

As if using every ounce of strength in her body.

"Evelyn," she spoke, her voice terribly hoarse. "Let's go."

Evelyn looked at her.

"What do you want to do?" she asked.

Mia lifted her head.

Her eyes were red and swollen, but her gaze had become unusually clear.

There was no trace of the former gentleness and attachment left in them.

Only icy hatred remained.

"I'm going to make him pay," she said.

Each word seemed squeezed from between her teeth.

"I'm going to make Liam Cooper understand the consequences of deceiving Mia Truman."
