Chapter 158

Evelyn raced home after the call.

She couldn’t fathom how her son had brought a woman into their house.

Henry never interacted with strangers.

He would never invite someone home.

So who was this woman?

What had she done to sway Henry?

Evelyn arrived, her breath catching the moment she saw the woman.

"Evelyn, you're back!" Clara rushed to the door, noticing her daughter's pallor and ragged breathing. She gripped Evelyn’s arm. "What’s wrong? You look ill!"

Evelyn’s gaze locked onto Sophia as if piercing through her soul.

That woman—with her hime-cut hair and pink puffy dress—had haunted her thoughts for years.

She never expected to see her in the flesh.

And most shockingly, brought home by her son.

How?

What was her motive?

Was she here for Dominic?

Evelyn’s head throbbed.

She couldn’t make sense of it. She had divorced Dominic.

She wanted nothing to do with him.

This woman had no reason to appear now.

"Mom, go to your room. I need to speak with her alone," Evelyn ordered.

Clara hesitated, sensing the tension. She didn’t understand why her daughter held such hostility toward someone with a mental disability.

Was Evelyn truly that vindictive?

With a conflicted sigh, Clara retreated to her room, unsure whom to side with.

Once alone, Evelyn advanced toward Sophia, her anger simmering.

"Why did you approach my son? What do you want?" Her voice was sharp. "Dominic and I are divorced. I have no ties to him anymore. If you dare harm my child, I won’t hold back!"

As she spoke, Evelyn forced herself to calm down.

The woman before her trembled, tears welling in her eyes before she burst into loud, childlike sobs.

It wasn’t the restrained crying of an adult.

It was raw, unfiltered—like a frightened child.

Sophia clutched her chest, wailing as if the world had wronged her.

Evelyn frowned.

What was happening?

This wasn’t the reaction she’d expected.

She followed Sophia as the woman stumbled toward the bedroom.

"Why are you crying? Answer me!" Evelyn demanded, though her tone softened slightly. "Why are you here? Did you come to see me? Then speak!"

Clara cracked the door open.

"Evelyn, she doesn’t understand you!" she interjected. Sophia immediately hid behind Clara, peeking at Evelyn with wide, fearful eyes.

Evelyn scoffed. "Did I suddenly start speaking another language? Or is she… mentally impaired?"

"Yes! She doesn’t comprehend anything I say either. She just keeps shaking her head!" Clara sighed. "Henry said someone was trying to hurt her, so he brought her here. He wants you to help her."

Evelyn was stunned.
