Chapter 399

When Nathan saw Michael's messages, he hesitated.

Forget it! He wouldn't get involved this time. He'd pretend he knew nothing. Dominic had clearly crossed the line this time.

How could he take Evelyn away without informing her family?

If Nathan were Michael, he'd be furious too.

Time ticked by, approaching eleven in the morning. Henry hadn't caused any disturbance. Nathan hadn't even caught a glimpse of him.

He didn't know Henry's current plan. Whatever it was, the boy might have already abandoned it.

After the funeral, guests proceeded to the hotel for lunch.

Nathan approached Dominic cautiously.

"Mr. Blackwood."

Dominic stopped and turned, his gaze icy.

"My condolences," Nathan offered awkwardly.

Dominic gave a curt nod and continued toward the parking lot. Nathan hurried after him, summoning courage to ask, "Mr. Blackwood, is Miss Thorne with you? Her children are worried about her safety—"

Dominic swallowed hard, his voice rough. "She's not dead."

Nathan blinked in confusion. What kind of answer was that? Not dead could mean alive but injured... or barely clinging to life. Where was she? What condition was she in?

While Nathan stood stunned, Dominic reached the black Rolls-Royce.

The bodyguard opened the door, reporting helplessly, "Miss Sophia insisted on waiting for you in the car."

Sophia looked up with bright, determined eyes. "Big Brother, I want to stay with you. Wherever you go, I'm going too."

Dominic paused at the car door, studying his sister's stubborn expression. Something thick lodged in his throat.

He entered the car and shut the door firmly.

"Sophia, I'm taking you home."

Her eyes reddened slightly as she shook her head.

"I have unfinished business," Dominic explained, taking her hand. "Once it's settled, I'll come home to spend time with you."

"Big Brother, you're a good person," Sophia said with disappointment. "But why were you so cruel to Evelyn? I heard you say you wanted to kill her. It scared me..."

Dominic squeezed her hand gently. "I was just frightening the children. You're not a child, Sophia. You know I wouldn't really do that, right?"

"Promise you won't hurt Evelyn?" Sophia pleaded. "If you do, Lily and Henry won't play with me anymore."

Dominic's expression darkened. "Don't worry about such things. Just wait for me at home."

Though unsatisfied, Sophia nodded obediently.

After escorting Sophia home, Dominic returned swiftly to his car. The black Rolls-Royce sped north like a phantom.

Meanwhile, in the forest mansion, Evelyn lay on the massive white bed, her eyes fluttering open.

Memories of last night's escape flooded back—the wolf attack in the woods. If not for Nicholas giving her that dagger when helping her escape, she might have been torn apart.

Never had she imagined fighting off a wolf with a dagger in hand.

The wolf had bitten her once, but she'd stabbed it in return—a bloody draw. After her counterattack, the wounded creature fled. She'd collapsed from blood loss, certain death awaited her... yet here she was, alive.

Her gaze swept the familiar room. One burning question remained: Had Dominic carried her back last night?
