Chapter 298

Dominic had only slept with Zoe once, yet she conceived from that single encounter?

His grip on the operating theater door handle loosened.

Nathan noticed the shift in his expression. His pulse quickened. What was happening? Why wasn't he going in to see Evelyn?

"Nathan, stay here," Dominic said through clenched teeth. "I need to return."

Nathan nodded silently, not daring to question further. After Dominic left, Nathan pushed the operating theater door ajar and peeked inside.

Evelyn had removed her coat and draped it over Clara. She sat motionless beside the bed, clutching Clara's lifeless hand while whispering through tears.

Nathan's vision blurred. He shut the door quietly. Pulling out his phone, he scrolled to Wesley's contact and made the call.

After updating Wesley, Nathan left the medical center and drove back to Mooncrest Manor. There was nothing more he could do for Evelyn here. Perhaps he could relieve Mike - let him tend to Evelyn while he watched over the children.

When Nathan arrived at the manor, both children were already asleep. He briefed Mike with red-rimmed eyes before the man rushed out the door.

The manor fell into heavy silence. Nathan entered the children's bedroom where they slept peacefully, exhausted from their eventful day.

A soft nightlight glowed beside the bed. Wanting to study their faces, Nathan turned up the brightness, flooding the room with light.

Lily resembled Evelyn strikingly - that same delicate beauty even in sleep. Adorable beyond words.

As for Henry, without his signature cap, the usual icy demeanor melted away. Sleeping soundly, he looked every bit his age - just a vulnerable little boy.

Nathan dimmed the lights and noticed the study desk cluttered with stationery, books, and a laptop - undoubtedly Henry's.

From what Nathan had observed, Henry wasn't troubled - he was extraordinary. Not a candidate for special needs schooling, but rather for gifted programs. A shame Evelyn only saw an ordinary child.

When Mike reached St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Clara had already been transferred to the morgue. Wesley sat beside Evelyn on the cold corridor benches as medical staff and grieving families rushed past, bringing gusts of chilled air with each passing.

"Evelyn!" Mike's heart shattered seeing her hollow expression.

At his voice, Evelyn lifted her head.

"Why are you here? Where are the children?" Her voice cracked from crying, eyes swollen and bloodshot.

She stood abruptly.

Mike rushed to embrace her. "Evelyn, you're not alone! I'm here—"

A sharp pain shot through Evelyn's temples. She pushed him away violently. "I asked about the children! Weren't you supposed to be watching them?"

"They're safe, sleeping soundly. Nathan's with them. He insisted I come to you." Mike grasped her hands, shocked by their iciness. "I needed to be here for you."
