Chapter 318

Dominic dialed Evelyn's number again, only to hear the automated voicemail greeting.

His grip tightened around the phone.

How dare Evelyn ignore his call?

Or had she turned her phone off completely?

Scrolling through his contacts, Dominic found Michael Sterling's number and pressed call.

Since they lived together and worked at the same company, they were practically inseparable.

Michael frowned when his phone buzzed with Dominic's name.

Why was Blackwood calling him?

Since when were they on speaking terms?

His gaze shifted to Evelyn, curled up asleep on the oversized bed, and realization struck.

He answered just as Dominic's venomous voice snapped through the line.

"Put Evelyn on the phone!"

Michael blinked in shock.

What the hell was his problem?

"Evelyn's asleep. What do you want?"

Keeping his voice low, Michael watched Evelyn's peaceful sleeping face.

She'd arrived exhausted three hours ago and collapsed into bed without explanation.

He'd been about to leave when he noticed she hadn't even brought a change of clothes.

"Wake her up. Now."

Dominic's command dripped with barely restrained fury.

Sophia had disappeared from Mooncrest Manor last night, and Evelyn had driven off in the middle of the night.

Then Sophia miraculously turned up at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Conveniently, several critical surveillance cameras at the hospital had malfunctioned overnight.

Dominic refused to be played for a fool.

He knew Evelyn was involved.

Michael recognized the dangerous edge in Dominic's tone.

Leaning over, he gently shook Evelyn's shoulder. "Wake up, Ev. Your ex is demanding to speak with you."

Ex.

The word made Dominic's jaw clench.

He despised that label.

Yet Michael insisted on using it every damn time.

Evelyn didn't stir, her breathing deep and even.

She must have pulled an all-nighter to be this dead to the world.

"Evelyn Thorne! Dominic Blackwood is on the phone! If you don't wake up right now, that arrogant bastard will storm over here himself!" Michael threatened loudly near her ear.

Evelyn finally stirred.

Rubbing her bleary eyes, she looked around disoriented.

"You said Dominic... Where is he?"

"Here." Michael thrust the phone at her. "He sounds ready to rip someone's head off. Brace yourself."

Evelyn squinted against the light as she took the phone.

Gesturing to the water bottle on the nightstand, she croaked, "Water. Please."

Hearing Evelyn's raspy voice only confirmed Dominic's suspicions.

She'd definitely been with Sophia all night.

Otherwise why would she still be in bed at this hour?

Michael uncapped the water and handed it over. Evelyn gulped several swallows before pressing the phone to her ear.

"Hello?" Her voice was still thick with sleep.
