Chapter 229
Lily needed to search for her mother on the first floor when she suddenly heard footsteps echoing from the kitchen.
Her tiny body froze in terror, barely daring to breathe before she bolted up the staircase.
Reaching the second floor, Lily pressed herself against the wall, her little chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath.
The footsteps were getting closer now.
Whoever it was had started climbing the stairs!
Panic surged through Lily as she frantically looked for a hiding spot.
Moments later, Mrs. Wilkins appeared on the second floor, making her way purposefully toward the master bedroom where Evelyn rested.
The housekeeper was deeply concerned about the tennis match between Dominic and Mike.
Though Dominic had recovered from his accident years ago, doctors had warned him against intense physical exertion.
Mrs. Wilkins couldn't bear the thought of Dominic losing and taking Mike's punch, so she had come to wake Evelyn.
She opened the door quietly and approached the bed.
Mrs. Wilkins studied Evelyn's peaceful sleeping face, conflicted about disturbing her rest but knowing this couldn't wait.
If the match concluded, it would be too late.
"Evelyn," Mrs. Wilkins called softly, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Evelyn!"
Evelyn's brows knitted together at the disturbance.
"Wake up, dear," Mrs. Wilkins insisted, raising her voice slightly.
Evelyn's eyelids fluttered open slowly.
Her bleary gaze focused on Mrs. Wilkins, and she managed a weak smile.
"Please wake up. Mike and Master Dominic are at the tennis courts. You must stop them! You know about Master Dominic's leg condition," Mrs. Wilkins explained urgently as she helped Evelyn sit up.
Rubbing her tired eyes, Evelyn murmured, "Mike and Dominic are playing tennis?"
"Yes!" Mrs. Wilkins exclaimed, then quickly recounted everything that had transpired earlier.
As Evelyn glanced around the unfamiliar room, a cold sweat broke out across her back.
"How did I get here?!"
After a brief hesitation, Mrs. Wilkins answered truthfully, "You locked yourself in your car and fell asleep last night. Heaven knows what might have happened if Master Dominic hadn't found you in time and rushed you to the hospital. We must hurry to the tennis courts now!"
The tennis match came to an abrupt halt when Evelyn appeared.
Her gaze swept over Henry and Mike before finally settling on Dominic's face.
"Thank you for last night."
"Don't mention it. You should get another check-up at the hospital." Seeing Evelyn's pale face seemed to calm the storm of emotions within him.
"Your blood tests showed some abnormalities last night."
"I understand..." Evelyn replied.
Aside from exhaustion, she didn't feel particularly unwell.
Mike suddenly grabbed her arm. "I'm taking you to the hospital right now!"
As they walked away, Evelyn couldn't help but glance back at Dominic.
She'd been exhausted after work last night when Mike called her to the hotel for a birthday surprise.
She'd declined, but Mike had insisted, leaving her no choice but to force herself to drive there.
Eventually, the fatigue overwhelmed her, and she'd pulled over before passing out in the car.
She'd wanted to call for help, but her body refused to cooperate.
That's how she'd ended up spending the night in her vehicle.
A shiver ran down Evelyn's spine as she remembered.
She might have died if no one had found her.
When Dominic returned to the living room, Mrs. Wilkins placed a steaming bowl of chicken soup before him.
"This was Evelyn's favorite. Such a shame she didn't get to have any," Mrs. Wilkins said regretfully.
Dominic finished the soup in silence before retreating to his room to rest.
At three o'clock that afternoon, a piercing wail shattered the mansion's peaceful atmosphere.
Dominic bolted upright at the childlike yet deafening cry.
It sounded like a child sobbing!
Hadn't Henry already left? Unless...
