Chapter 226
After what felt like an eternity of struggling, Evelyn's heavy eyelids refused to open.
Dominic's deep voice reached her ears, but who was that woman speaking to him?
The feminine voice was completely unfamiliar... Addressing him as "Big Brother."
Was Dominic actually flirting with another woman right now?
Unbelievable!
Here she was, unconscious in bed, while he entertained some woman at her bedside.
The audacity!
If she could just wake up this instant, she'd throw them both out of the room immediately!
Fuming in her half-conscious state, Evelyn felt her chest tighten with anger.
Exhaustion eventually won, pulling her back into deep slumber.
Dominic gently guided Sophia's hand, leading her back to her own room to rest.
Once his sister was settled, Dominic returned to the master bedroom.
Evelyn had shifted positions, her peaceful breathing indicating deep sleep.
Dominic stepped into the ensuite bathroom, turning on the shower.
When Zoe received word that Dominic had brought Evelyn home to spend the night, her vision blurred with rage.
Just who did he consider his girlfriend now?
She knew perfectly well Dominic only agreed to date her because of her ability to treat Sophia's condition.
But that didn't mean he could publicly humiliate her like this!
Bringing Evelyn home overnight? What was this if not blatant infidelity?
The shame she'd felt after accidentally sleeping with Julian suddenly seemed insignificant.
She bitterly realized Dominic probably wouldn't care even if he found out about her night with Julian.
Grabbing a bottle of red wine, Zoe stormed back to her guest room.
Wesley arrived at the Blackwood estate at dawn to check on Evelyn's condition.
Dominic appeared in casual loungewear, his expression darkening at the unexpected visitor.
"Clara sent me, Mr. Blackwood. She's concerned Evelyn hasn't returned home," Wesley explained.
He knew showing up unannounced at this hour was improper, but he couldn't refuse Clara's request.
Dominic reluctantly led Wesley to the bedroom.
Wesley had been genuinely worried about Evelyn's wellbeing.
But seeing her sprawled across the entire king-sized bed, leaving no space for Dominic, his concerns eased.
"My apologies for the intrusion, Mr. Blackwood," Wesley said before quietly exiting.
Dominic retreated to the adjacent guest suite for more rest.
It was barely seven in the morning!
Having only fallen asleep around two, his mood was particularly foul.
Once outside the Blackwood gates, Wesley immediately called Clara.
"Evelyn's still sleeping soundly. Dominic Blackwood is resting in another room," he reported. "No need to worry. She's perfectly safe. I'm certain she'll return once she wakes."
Clara exhaled in relief. "Thank you, Wesley. With the children, I couldn't just go over there myself."
"I'll check again if she's not back by noon," Wesley offered.
"That would be wonderful! Thank you so much."
"Don't mention it. I feel partially responsible for Evelyn's condition," Wesley admitted regretfully. "She wouldn't be this exhausted if I hadn't assigned her that new case."
"Please don't say that. Evelyn wouldn't have progressed so quickly without Professor Whitmore's guidance. Healing people is her calling. The work may be demanding, but you're not to blame."
The phone call lifted Clara's spirits. "I'm going to the market, Henry. Watch your sister until I return, alright?" she told her grandson.
Henry gave a solemn nod.
The moment Clara stepped out, the children sprang into action.
Lily grabbed her small backpack while Henry retrieved his laptop from Evelyn's room.
"We should tell Grandma, Henry! She'll worry otherwise," Lily insisted, tugging her brother's sleeve with wide, earnest eyes.
