Chapter 334
Five days later, Dominic arrived at Blackwood Group headquarters precisely at 10 AM as usual.
"Sir, your engagement is tomorrow," Nathan reminded him as he held open the office door. "Shouldn't you take the day off?"
Dominic strode past without breaking step. "Not necessary."
Nathan followed closely behind, clearing his throat. "Sir, Michael just informed me that Vanguard Holdings has agreed to establish a new facility in Eldermere to supply high-end lenses exclusively for Apex Innovations."
Dominic paused mid-stride. "Isn't Vanguard Holdings currently partnered with Aureate Tech?"
"Exactly." Nathan adjusted his tie. "This demonstrates the exceptional rapport between Miss Thorne and Vanguard's CEO. They wouldn't relocate operations just for anyone."
Dominic's fingers twitched against his briefcase. "What else did you uncover?"
"The current CEO of Vanguard happens to be the nephew of Professor Sebastian Whitmore's cousin." Nathan lowered his voice. "Apex Innovations' success wasn't accidental - it was orchestrated."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
Why would Sebastian Whitmore's relative specifically know Evelyn?
Was this arranged or mere coincidence?
"Thornfield Industries' current challenges aren't product-related but concern branding and market penetration," Nathan continued. "I suggested hiring a marketing firm, but Michael said Evelyn refused. She insists quality speaks for itself—"
Dominic's icy glare cut him off. "Why are you reporting Thornfield's affairs to me? Who signs your paycheck?"
Nathan froze.
Weren't you listening intently two seconds ago?
Dominic turned to his computer, voice flat. "Evelyn and I are finished. Cease these unnecessary reports about her or her company."
"Yes, sir."
Nathan retreated, nearly colliding with Lucas in the hallway.
"The boss claims it's officially over with Evelyn," Nathan muttered. "We both know he's lying to himself."
Lucas chuckled. "Since when did you grow a spine? Careful, Michael's rebellious streak is rubbing off on you."
"I'm serious! He's getting engaged tomorrow but looks ready to murder someone. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion."
"His choice, his consequences." Lucas shrugged. "We're just spectators."
Nathan narrowed his eyes. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"
"Don't be absurd." Lucas's grin widened. "Though I am tempted to forge his signature and send Evelyn an invitation..."
"That would derail the entire engagement." Nathan's eyes widened. "Isn't that exactly why he's avoiding inviting her? Because seeing her might change his mind?"
Lucas coughed abruptly and clapped Nathan's shoulder.
"What? You know I'm right—"
"Nathan Cross! My office. Now!" Dominic's thunderous voice echoed down the hall.
Nathan's blood ran cold.
At noon, Evelyn's phone buzzed with a call from Mooncrest Academy.
"Miss Thorne, Lily isn't feeling well. We've sent her home to rest. Please check on her when possible."
Evelyn's fork clattered onto her plate.
She'd dropped off both children perfectly healthy that morning.
What could have happened?
Her fingers trembled as she dialed Henry's smartwatch.
The line connected instantly.
"Henry, the school called about Lily being sick. What's going on?"
Through the receiver came the distinct sound of wind rushing past.
They weren't home.
