Chapter 464
Evelyn's body stiffened instantly. With her back turned to Dominic, she couldn't see his expression or guess his intentions.
Her mind raced with possibilities. 'What if he tries something? Should I push him away or pretend to be asleep?'
To her astonishment, he remained motionless after lying down.
His warm breath caressed her neck. She could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against her back. As his breathing slowed, his arm suddenly snaked around her waist - that familiar possessive gesture from their passionate past.
Eyes fluttering open, Evelyn found herself lost in bittersweet memories. Silent tears welled up as Dominic slipped into deep slumber behind her.
Gently lifting his arm, she sat up and wiped her damp cheeks. Studying his sleeping form, her gaze drifted downward.
An irresistible urge seized her - she needed to see the scar on his chest. Her fingers trembled as they reached for the first button.
The moment she touched it, Dominic's face twisted in displeasure. Still asleep, he forcefully batted her hand away.
Evelyn blinked in shock. 'How can he be this alert while unconscious? Has he always reacted this way to touch? Then how did he ever... with Zoe?'
The thought plunged her into despair.
Having known no other man, Evelyn couldn't reconcile Dominic's intimacy with another woman. Even if his heart still belonged to her, this betrayal felt unforgivable.
Tears streamed down her face unchecked. Pregnancy hormones made her emotions volatile, but she'd been managing them well - until Dominic shattered her composure so effortlessly.
Suddenly, his eyes flew open.
Caught off guard, Evelyn had no time to compose herself. Dominic took in her distraught state with growing alarm.
"Evelyn? What's wrong?" He sat up instantly, sleep forgotten, and brushed away her tears with rough fingertips. "Why are you crying?"
Flushing with embarrassment, she grasped for an excuse. "I wanted to check your wound, but you pushed me away."
"My apologies. I wasn't fully conscious," Dominic murmured, fingers working his buttons. "It's not a pleasant sight."
When the scar came into view, Evelyn felt mocked by its ugly presence.
Her fingers hovered over the damaged flesh.
Dominic shuddered and caught her wrist. "Don't. It doesn't hurt anymore."
Snatching her hand back, she hissed, "You're insane! Had you died that day, even if your family didn't accuse me, the world would've branded me your murderer! I could've spent life in prison!"
Studying her red-rimmed eyes, Dominic pressed his lips together.
That moment of madness had been pure impulse. Provoked beyond reason by the woman he loved wanting him dead, he'd seen no purpose in living.
"Are you blaming me for wanting you dead?" Evelyn read his silence perfectly. "Thoughts are private. Unless acted upon, they mean nothing!"
