Chapter 340

The doors of the Rolls-Royce clicked shut with finality.

Evelyn sat trapped inside, regret washing over her in waves.

She must have been half-asleep when she entered the vehicle this morning.

By the time realization struck, the locks had already engaged.

What fresh hell was this?

Had she just been kidnapped?

"Dominic, what do you want?" Evelyn demanded, glaring at the man beside her with narrowed eyes.

Wasn't this supposed to be his engagement day?

Where did he find time to ambush her like this?

"Do you know Eric Montclair, Evelyn?" Dominic's piercing gaze locked onto hers, his voice dangerously calm. "Don't even think about lying to me."

After their brief phone call earlier, Evelyn's phone had died completely.

She had no idea what storm was brewing online.

The mention of Eric sent warning bells clanging in her mind.

"I don't. Why?"

She maintained eye contact with Dominic's familiar-yet-alien expression, forcing her breathing to stay even.

"Why would he help you if you were strangers?" Dominic's voice turned razor sharp. "I saw his photo on your phone before. You've never cared about celebrities, yet you saved his picture. Now you claim not to know him? Do you take me for a fool?"

His accusatory tone ignited her temper. "What business is it of yours who I know?" she snapped.

Her defiance seemed to calm him momentarily.

Was this her way of admitting the connection?

If Evelyn truly knew Eric Montclair, it would solve everything.

"Help me contact him," Dominic's voice dropped to a rough whisper, almost pleading. "I'll owe you."

Evelyn couldn't suppress a bitter laugh.

"I told you - I don't know Eric Montclair! If you want him, go find him yourself!"

"Evelyn!"

"Yelling won't make me know him! Shouldn't you be getting engaged to Zoe Montgomery today? You can hunt down Eric anytime - why choose your engagement day? Your fiancée will be devastated if you don't show!" Evelyn fired back.

Her words drew a humorless chuckle from Dominic.

His Adam's apple bobbed before he said, "Help me reach Eric, and I'll go through with the engagement."

Evelyn's lips curled in derision. "Your engagement means nothing to me! Are you seriously trying to bargain with that? Do you think I still have feelings for you?"

Each word struck Dominic like a physical blow.

His instincts screamed that Evelyn knew Eric.

Why else would the reclusive star emerge to defend Thornfield Industries?

Yet she refused to help him.

If their positions were reversed, he'd move heaven and earth for her.

They might be divorced, but they'd shared something real once.

How could she be so cold?

She was utterly heartless.

Swallowing his pain, Dominic pulled out his phone and dialed Zoe.

On the other end, Zoe's despair lifted slightly when Dominic's name flashed on her screen.

"Where are you?" Her voice trembled. "I'm at the hotel with Eleanor and the others. We couldn't reach you earlier. The guests arrived, so we started without you."

"I can't go through with this, Zoe," Dominic said, his voice carefully controlled. "I'm with Evelyn now. I realize... I still love her."

Evelyn's breath caught in her throat.

Had he lost his mind?

This had to be insanity.

Otherwise, how could he do this? Say these things?

He was humiliating everyone involved!

Zoe's anguished sob echoed through the car speakers.

After waiting all morning, this was her reward?

Evelyn Thorne was nothing but a homewrecker!

Stealing her fiancé on their engagement day!

How would she explain this to hundreds of guests?

The shame would follow her forever.

People would laugh at her for years!

"Zoe, what's wrong?" Eleanor's frantic voice came through as Zoe's weeping grew uncontrollable. Just then, Gregory approached after ending another call.
