Chapter 40

Evelyn's phone buzzed fifteen minutes later.

She answered the call, hung up, then quickly texted Sophie before rushing toward the hotel exit.

Adrian watched Evelyn's retreating figure with amusement.

How had she managed to find men willing to deceive Dominic Blackwood behind his back?

Why couldn’t she just stay obediently by his side?

Where on earth would she find someone better than Dominic Blackwood?

Adrian had no clue what was going through her mind.

Sophie’s reply came swiftly: [What’s the hurry? Is it really that urgent?]

Evelyn: [Extremely urgent! I’ll explain later!]

The caller had been Dominic’s bodyguard.

His message was clear—wait at the hotel entrance, or suffer the consequences.

Evelyn still remembered the last time she had defied him. The man was ruthless.

Even if he was just following Dominic’s orders, she wasn’t taking any chances.

A sleek black car pulled up in front of her fifteen minutes later.

The window rolled down, revealing the bodyguard’s cold, unreadable expression.

Evelyn climbed into the backseat, and the car sped off before she could even shut the door properly.

"You know, Miss Thorne," the bodyguard began, voice dripping with disdain. "If Mr. Blackwood kept a dog for a few months, it would at least learn loyalty. Why can’t you?"

"Are you implying I’m worse than a dog?" Evelyn shot back.

"That’s exactly what I’m saying," he sneered. "All you’ve done is leech off him and make his life miserable."

"You think I enjoy this?" Evelyn snapped. "If you hate me so much, convince him to divorce me."

"You’re unbelievable!" the bodyguard growled, slamming a fist against the steering wheel. "I don’t know what he sees in you."

Evelyn stiffened. She tried to stay calm, but the words spilled out before she could stop them.

"If he loved me, would he have forced me to get rid of my baby?"

"Did you really expect him to raise another man’s child?"

"What if it wasn’t someone else’s?" Evelyn challenged. "He still wouldn’t have let me keep it."

"Then don’t have one!" the bodyguard snapped. "If you were half as smart as Miss Chamberlain, you wouldn’t be in this mess."

Evelyn turned to stare out the window. "That’s your opinion. I want children. If he can’t accept that, how can you say he loves me?"

The bodyguard exhaled sharply, frustration evident.

After a tense silence, Evelyn suddenly asked, "Why do you think he loves me? Because I don’t see it."

"He slept with you, didn’t he?" the bodyguard ground out. "What else would you call that?"

"That’s your definition of love?" Evelyn scoffed.

"He sent me to check on you after what happened in the outskirts last night. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?"

Evelyn froze.

She hadn’t expected Dominic to investigate her.

"And how exactly did I repay him?" she asked cautiously.

The bodyguard’s glare was answer enough.

"You told them you went to Forrance with Julian Whitmore. That you had a great relationship with him and passed him something important. You’re a liar and a cheat!"

Evelyn let out a bitter laugh. "So he’s angry again?"

"You think this is funny? He’ll make you regret it!"

"I was testing the lie detector," Evelyn muttered. "Waste of money. I didn’t think he’d dig deeper."

"I told you—he loves you! Why won’t you believe me?" the bodyguard shouted, voice raw with frustration.
