Chapter 465
"Why bring this up now?" Dominic didn't want to argue. There was something far more important between them—their child.
"Why not? Just because we avoid the topic doesn’t mean it’s resolved!" Evelyn knew dwelling on the past was unhealthy, but some wounds needed to be reopened before they could truly heal. Otherwise, they’d fester into something far worse.
Dominic pulled her into his arms, his voice softening. "Weren’t you going to sleep? Did I wake you?"
Before she could react, her cheek pressed against the scorching heat of his bare chest. Panic flared, and she shoved him away, rolling onto her side with her back to him.
Dominic stared at her slender frame, his chest tightening. Evelyn had never told him what his mother said to her before she died. And he lacked the courage to ask.
If she was this upset when he stayed silent, confronting her would only make things worse.
He tugged the blanket over her before settling beside her again.
At six in the evening, Michael and Nathan returned with the children. The moment they stepped into the mansion, they found Evelyn curled up on the couch, watching TV.
"Evelyn, I brought dinner." Michael unpacked the takeout in front of her. "Your favorite fruits, soup, and appetizers. Try them."
One glance at the food, and her stomach growled loudly.
"Mom!" Lily plopped down beside her, pouting. "Why didn’t you tell Henry and me about the baby in your belly? Are we not good enough? I’m mad!"
Evelyn winced. "I’m sorry, Lily. I should’ve told you both. It’s my fault, and I’ll make it up to you."
"Okay… An apology is fine, no need to make it up." Lily reached out to touch Evelyn’s stomach. "Huh? Where’s the baby? I don’t feel anything!"
Evelyn had barely eaten all day, and her stomach was nearly flat from hunger.
Nathan and Michael exchanged glances, their expressions darkening.
"Evelyn!" Michael exploded. "Did that bastard Dominic force you into another abortion?"
Evelyn stayed silent.
Nathan struggled to believe Dominic could be that cruel, but the sight of Evelyn’s pale face and hollow stomach made him waver. To prove he still had a conscience, he declared, "Evelyn, if Mr. Blackwood forced you into this, I’ll resign immediately."
Just then, a towering figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
Both men turned.
Nathan’s knees nearly buckled when he met Dominic’s icy gaze. He clung to Michael’s arm for support.
Dominic descended the stairs, stopping in front of Nathan. "Resigning?"
Nathan swallowed hard, unable to speak under that piercing stare.
Michael, however, was furious. "You bastard! That’s Evelyn’s baby! Who the hell do you think you are, forcing her to get rid of it?"
He lunged forward, but Nathan yanked him back with all his strength.
Evelyn finally snapped. "He didn’t force me. And can you both stop acting like idiots in front of my kids?"
Michael instantly shut up.
Dominic glanced at the food spread out before Evelyn and said to Nathan, "Come, Nathan."
"Y-Yes, Mr. Blackwood. Of course, I’m not resigning… Not if you didn’t force Evelyn to… you know." Nathan stammered as he followed Dominic out.
Silence reclaimed the living room.
"Evelyn, are you insane?" Michael hissed. "You already have two kids, and now you’re having another? What are you, a breeding machine?" His voice dripped with disappointment. "You nearly died last time, and now you’re risking it again for that bastard? Is it worth it?"
Evelyn’s head throbbed. She hadn’t wanted another child—not until Dominic demanded it as compensation. What choice did she have?
"Fine," Michael muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets. "What’s his stance on this? He wants the baby? And then what?"
