Chapter 1856
chapter1856
Manfred's down jacket shielded him from the wind and snow.
From a distance, Kemp watched with furrowed brows, his concern growing. Manfred had been acting strangely lately. He could have moved out of this shabby courtyard long ago but had chosen not to.
Moreover, the clothes Manfred wore were unfamiliar to Kemp. They weren't the usual silk or cotton garments but were incredibly warm. There were also books and other rare items, things Kemp had never seen before.
A few days ago, his curiosity got the best of him, and he finally asked Manfred. It turned out that these things had been gifted to him by someone who had helped him in secret before Kemp's arrival.
Without that help, Manfred might not have made it to the present. Kemp speculated that Manfred had stayed in this place because of that person.
However, the mysterious figure had not appeared for nearly a month, and they seemed unlikely to reappear. Continuing to wait wasn't a sustainable option.
"Mr. Manfred, I just received a message from Mr. Holland Senior. He and the others will arrive in Vlario in a week," Kemp said after some thought, approaching Manfred.
Manfred nodded silently.
After a brief pause, Kemp hesitated before asking, "Are you still waiting for that person?"
Manfred's eyes grew cold. After a long silence, he finally responded, "She said she would return."
He was waiting. It hadn't even been a month yet. Perhaps there was something that had prevented her from coming this time.
Kemp wanted to say more but paused when he saw Manfred's demeanor. He decided against it.
At that moment, Kemp heard footsteps from several dozen feet away. He quickly disappeared into the shadows after warning Manfred that someone was approaching.
Not long later, a maid appeared before Manfred.
"Mr. Manfred, Mr. Randall requests your presence."
"Wait a moment," Manfred replied.
He turned and entered the house, changed into another outfit, and followed the maid to meet Randall.
As he walked, the maid couldn't help but think-Manfred had no sense of fatherly affection for Randall, and it showed in his demeanor.
Over a month ago, everyone in the mansion believed that Manfred's life was over. He would never rise again. As long as Zea was around, Manfred was nothing more than a useless man.
But now, things had changed. Not long ago, Cyril had become the one deemed useless. Now, he couldn't even step outside to face others.
He no longer left his room, and the only things he did each day were drink and hit people.
Zea had once paid attention to Cyril, but recently, she had been caught in petty rivalries with the two women that Randall had recently taken in.
As for Randall, he was completely enchanted by the two women, spending his days indulging in their whims.
No one in the mansion dared speak up in front of him. With his advancing age, no one knew how much longer he could keep up this reckless behavior.
It wasn't until now that they realized the only stable person left in the Atkinson family was Manfred.
"What are you looking at?" Manfred asked coldly.
The maid quickly responded, "Mr. Manfred, Mr. Randall is feeling unwell today. He had a doctor examine him, but nothing was
found Mr. Randall has asked to see you. It seems like he wants to speak with you."
It was strange. After seeing the doctor, Randall dismissed everyone and asked for Manfred to come. Randall had never actively sought Manfred's company before. This was the first time.
And with the way Randall had changed his attitude toward Manfred fately, the maids were instructed to treat him with utmost respect. They had prepared another room for Manfred to move into, but he hadn't agreed to it.
