Chapter 1921
chapter1921
The heat seared against Vivian's wrist like a scorching iron.
She jolted awake from a dream in which she had been reunited with Joe and Skylar, the sharp pain cutting through the fleeting bliss. But the moment her eyes snapped open, the bracelet returned to its usual inert state.
It was baffling. She couldn't make sense of it no matter how hard she tried. Eventually, she decided to push her thoughts aside.
Stepping out of the room, she spotted Kemp waiting nearby.
Upon seeing her, Kemp immediately approached. "Ms. Martin, Mr. Atkinson is downstairs. He's waiting for breakfast and has had the innkeeper prepare your favorite sandwiches."
He was surprised by Manfred's thoughtfulness. Whenever it came to her, his attentiveness was almost unmatched.
The mention of sandwiches lifted her spirits. Hunger stirred, urging her downstairs.
Manfred noticed her approach, his concern visibly easing when he saw her looking lively. "The innkeeper says breakfast will be ready in about 15 minutes. You're awake just in time to enjoy freshly made sandwiches."
"I can already smell how delicious they will be," Vivian replied as her stomach growled audibly.
She hadn't eaten much the day before, lost in sleep and drowsiness. Now, hunger gnawed at her with renewed vigor.
As the savory aroma of fresh sandwiches filled the room, her thoughts drifted to Edgar and Janine. Their cooking had always been exceptional, effortlessly crafting meals she loved. Memories of her modern-day family, her uncles, and Natalie surfaced unbidden.
Manfred watched her eat, assuming her quiet focus was due to sheer hunger. But beneath her calm exterior, Vivian wrestled with lingering emotions. She quickly adjusted, masking her thoughts. After eating enough to feel satisfied, she looked up. "After breakfast, we're hitting the road again, right?"
"Yes. If all goes well, we should reach Hubril by tomorrow afternoon."
Manfred hadn't planned on rushing. He had hoped to show her around the town, certain she'd find it
intriguing. But urgent news frommet
Hubri had changed their plans. Time was now a luxury they couldn't afford.
Vivian said, "Alright, then let's ask the innkeeper to pack a few sandwiches for us. We can eat them if we get hungry on the road."
Oddly, after just one sandwich, Vivian felt slightly nauseous. Perhaps it was from eating too quickly on an empty stomach or maybe the onset of a cold.
Manfred immediately instructed someone nearby to fetch the innkeeper. About 15 minutes later, they were back in the carriage.
Once inside the carriage, Vivian continued to gaze at the passing scenery. When she felt tired, she switched to reading a book.
The two of them chatted about
various topics, and she hadn't forgotten to teach Manfred some knowledge about negative items and fortune-telling. Time passed quickly, and before they knew it, evening arrived.
They stayed at an inn that night. Vivian felt better, though her appetite remained faint. She hadn't slept during the ride, but she dismissed her lack of hunger as nothing unusual.
Manfred, unconvinced, checked her pulse again that evening. His diagnosis was reassuring-Vivian was fine. Only then did he relax.
By the next afternoon, they had successfully arrived in Hubril.
